USB > PCI Adapter

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

Got a friend with an old PC with a pretty nice Creative Sound Card connected with PCI, the PC itself is dead now so we want to migrate everything over to a laptop he's purchased but ideally would like to save the Sound Card.

Does anybody know of an external PCI to USB or similar we can use?

Think kinda how those SATA to USB things work, only PCI.

Thanks

Chris

Somebody has recently asked me if these things exist too, but I just can't see how it would work.

However, I see that there is one firm that makes some sort of USB to PCI board. But it's not straightforward. It needs external power, specific software and it all looks a bit whacky if you ask me. :p

So it looks like the Laptop may have an ExpressCard slot, which I understand is a 'version' of PCI. Does that help?

Found these, but they're PCI Express, not PCI :(

PCI Express actually includes an standard PCI-e 1x, what kind of adapter you found?

A quick search give threads from around 2009 talking about a ssi2 pci - SSI2 PCI card or below which works from a cardbus but I cant see anything new you might use http://www.bhphotovi...ull_Length.html

There are external caddys for running multi monitor graphics cards for laptops but these are PCI express

Hello,

The ExpressCard to PCIe systems are typically for hooking up an external GPU to a laptop, and cost several hundreds of dollars.

If your friend wants a sound card that's better than what comes with the laptop, I would suggest looking into a USB sound card, such as those made by Creative, E-Mu (Creative's professional brand), FocusRite, M-Audio or other audio gear manufacturer. These typically start around $100 and go upwards from there. For less than the cost of a docking solution you should be able to purchase a very nice one.
