REM2000 Posted March 14, 2013 Share Posted March 14, 2013 Windows 95 as it was the first full on Windows with great multimedia support, i used to run Windows 3.1/3.11 but it was more of a utility and i spent most of my time in DOS. Next Windows 2000, i loved NT 4.0 and 2000 was the icing on the cake, bringing USB support, multimedia support, rock solid and really quick, Next Windows 7, reminds me a lot of Windows 2000, fast and ultra reliable, Next Windows 8, it's really grown on me a lot, love the speed and performance of it, still not massively impressed by metro. I did love Windows ME as it was the fastest windows for games, i never had any of the stability issues and it would easily play directx games faster than other 9x's and WinXP. I know it's off topic but Hated Windows 98/SE and Windows XP as they both slowed down the OS's they were both derived from (Win95 and 2000) adding bloat and not really much else. Whether Windows 95 started it all or not, it was still a crash and burn POS, although I'd probably use it over Vista or Me or Windows 8!! Windows 2000 because it finally provided an easier to use Windows NT based system for masses and Windows 7 because it provided the sort of refinement that allowed Windows 8 and future releases to be developed. Windows historically has been about versatility; it's been a general-purpose/multipurpose operating environment (3.x/9x) and operating system (NT), and 8 drives that home with a jackhammer. Given proper hardware support, you can run 8 as a mini (or even not-so-mini) *server* - thanks to Hyper-V. Meanwhile, you can still do practically anything and everything previous flavors could do, and without a real hardware *tax*. Versatility FTW. If an endconnector wasn't tightly fit, the whole network went down ;-) win95 as it started the new UI win2000, much improved over NT win7, great evolution over XP and Vista win8, another change in UI. I've moved over to 7 in the past week or two and...well, a lot of things are great (the improved search in the start menu, for one). But there are a lot of things that annoy me about it. Please - Windows 2000 Professional was skinnable. In fact, most of the skins for XP would also work with Windows 2000 Professional. Windows 2000 Professional borrowed a lot of UI tricks from Windows Millenium Edition and 98 Second Edition - however, because it was still NT under the pretty skin, it was both far more efficient and far more secure than either ME or 98SE. Windows 2000 Professional (again, due to those NT insides) was also a better Internet client than 9x (including ME) - even over dial-up. (It was the better Internet client performance - I was still using dial-up in those days - AND that I could take my most popular games with me - Windows 2000 Pro had surprisingly-solid game support - that got me to switch - from 98 Second Edition. Loved how small the the login box was and the fact it was in the center of the screen. Not the giant full screen ones we have today. The entire OS (like someone already mentioned) was very straight to the point.
