Guth Posted March 17, 2013 Share Posted March 17, 2013 Hey guys, looking for some advice or reassurance. I recently got a new graphics card as I sold my console and wanted to start gaming on PC. The only games Ive really played are older ones as I've been a bit strapped for cash. So the card hasn't been worked all that hard, it was hardly ever above 60% load playing older call of duty games. I just got crysis 3 and have been playing with the settings as high as I can whilst still getting a decent frame rate. I just played 2 hours straight and started to smell a melting plastic smell. I opened up the case and its the card is coming from, the card was only at 70 degrees C though so its not that hot I don't think. Is this something to be expected with a new card? The fan did stop a few weeks ago but I gave it a push round and it started again. I checked that but it was still spinning. Perhaps the fan is on its way out and isnt spinning full speed? Detection Posted March 17, 2013 Share Posted March 17, 2013 Burning plastic / electrical smell comes from overloaded PSUs alright, I ran 2 x 6850s on 1 x 570w Trust PSU to see what would happen, its stunk the room out with that smell and cut out, but always recovered 400w minimum, if you have a 400w PSU, it is not providing 400w or anything close to that Guth 1 Share Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Hum Posted March 17, 2013 Share Posted March 17, 2013 Sounds like serious overheating to me. Let the case Open for better cooling. Or likely there will be a melt-down and permanent damage. The last model I purchased (EVGA GTX660 SC) had some transparent plastic cling film over the heat sink to prevent it from being scratched.
