A teenager who was shot and killed in Sterling, Virginia over the weekend may have accidentally entered the wrong home after a night of drinking.

Law enforcement officials told The Washington Post that the drunk teen had been dropped off by friends at a house just two doors down from where he lived. Both houses were two story, red brick homes and on the same side of the street.

The Loudoun County Sheriff?s Office refused to release the names of anyone involved, and only described the shooting as an unknown intruder being killed by a homeowner.

According to the Post, law enforcement sources believed that the teen may have entered the home through a rear window and was not armed.

Real estate records indicated that the shooting occurred in the home of Donald West Wilder II. Neighbor Joanna Roman described him as ?a great neighbor, a helper, someone who spends spare time volunteering to help others.?

On Monday, the sheriff?s office confirmed to WUSA that the male teen had been a student at Park View High School student. A school official told WRC that grief counselors would be available to students on Monday.

Darwin award candidate. Lets see...

- Drunk

- Teenager

- Night time

- Enters through rear window (wtf)

Yep, guy was pretty damn stupid. Home owner did the right thing. If I was the home owner, I would have assumed it was a burglary attempt and in times like that, you don't want to sit and wait till you know if he is armed or not.

And if we are not trigger happy, the life could've been saved.

But who am I kidding, that kid probably planting a bomb!

So I'm guessing if the kid was armed and killed the homeowner your response would have been "stupid home owner, should have shot the kid".

Why I do not agree with shoot first ask questions later. You have a gun, armed, pointed at an intruder. Obviously he was visible. Takes a second to evaluate the situation and to see if there is a threat and if there was a threat, all you need to do is pull the trigger.

Bunch of kids are like this and this is nothing new that has been happening for decades. The kid was dumb, yes, but it wasnt worth his life. I know that if I killed that kid, I would feel really horrible regardless. What would of happened if that as mentally challenged person with the wrong house.

And these days where it is EASY to mix up houses, I am not surprised he got the house mixed up. Even sober some houses are hard to tell apart. With all these cookie cutter sub divisions going up around big cities, each house looks identical almost. Have to actually look at the house numbers to make sure you have the right place.

Anyway, just my 2 cents.

*sigh* Another unfortunate incident.

Remember to keep this specific to the news topic. We have a Gun Control Debate for those that want to argue the more general idea.

On this subject, I've been in a similar situation before. I walked home and was tired as anything. The problem is that the house on the street looks identical to the other houses. I went to put my key in to the lock of the house and it wouldn't fit. After a couple of minutes of confusion, the light came on in the house and my neighbour was looking at me very confused...I apologised and went next door.

If I had been in his exact situation though, I wouldn't have tried breaking in when the front door didn't work...

Same thing happened to a friend and I in Phoenix. Went to see someone and went to the wrong house. The lady at the door gave us a annoyed/irritated look. We apologized and went to the next house over which was the correct house.

But you didn't enter through a back window and give reason for the lady to think she had someone break into her house.

I'm pretty sure that was the point. The kid was silly for "breaking in" at that time of night, even if he thought it was his house.

We've all lost our keys at some point, but I wouldn't consider entering via "nefarious" routes to be an option, and I know what is in the house.
