I tried to use Windows 8 on a HTPC and i'm struggling with being able to navigate the start screen without using a mouse/keyboard.

The Xbox 360 controller doesn't work (real missed opportunity?!) and i'm wondering is it possible to set it up to run from a TV remote control, in the same way you can control a raspberry pi/raspbmc with a tv remote via hdmi?

Essentially what I would like to be able to do is use a controller to navigate the start screen to load either steam/netflix etc. Is there a solution?

I use one of these and it allows you to navigate the start screen:

It doesn't require additional software, it just works.

Yup... Media Center remotes work just fine.

XBStart is what you need.

Just tried an old RC118 MCE remote, still works under Windows 8.1 Update x64 to navigate the Start Screen..
