No power to the mobo and I'm out of ideas..

Recommended Posts

Awhile ago I ordered the parts for a new PC build. I got:

ASRock H77 Pro4/MVP LGA 1155 Intel H77 Motherboard

G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333

Intel Pentium G860 Sandy Bridge 3.0GHz

Antec VP-450 450W ATX 12V v2.3

GIGABYTE GZ-F3HEB Black SECC Steel Case

A couple identical 2TB HDDs I had lying around

I put it all together, pressed the ON switch and the fans start to spin for a brief second, then nothing. Press the power button again, nothing at all. If left for a bit of time it will briefly spint he fans again but nothing more.

After hooking the PSU into an old spare computer and finding the PSU powering it fine I convince myself it must be the motherboard. I send that away and get a new one. Hook it all up and.. exact same thing. Fans spin for a quarter of a second, then nothing. At this point I think maybe the PSU just needs to burn in a for a bit and jump the power-on pin and ground and let it run for a half hour. I hook it back into the motherboard and SUCCESS! it starts and gets me through probably 20 restarts while fighting with it to setup RAID.

24 hours rolls by, I attempt to start it, computer is now back to square one. Same problem. Jumping the power-on pin doesnt work this time. I figure it MUST be the PSU at this point and send that back to Antec. I finally get my return, plug it in, and.. exact. Same. Problem.

It's now been 3 months and due to some crap with a bent CPU pin (It didnt matter that I argued it must have happened during shipping and wouldnt have caused the problem anyways) and a whole lot of shipping costs I'm now well over what it would have cost just to buy this damn thing from Best Buy. I'm lost, what do I do now?

tl;dr: replaced mobo, replaced PSU, computer still just spins fans for a quick second then stops. HELP.

Uh, this is a shot in the dark here, but is the motherboard grounded properly? Take the entire motherboard out of the case and place it on something solid. See if it boots then.

that particular mobo seems to have just as many bad reviews as it does good so it seems like a very hit and miss mobo

my advice would be to pick a different mobo and pay close attention to the rating and reviews. and stay away from some of ASRock's older mobos, they've improved quite a bit lately but some of their older stuff is absolute garbage

You might have gotten two bad mobo's in a row. This has happened to me once, and it makes you pull your hair out wondering why it doesn't work after 'ruling out the mobo'; Don't rule it out. The likelihood of getting 2 bad mobo's in a row is not as low as you'd think.

Edit: Come to think of it, that was an ASrock mobo that did that.

Yeah this sounds like something that happened with my last computer that had an ASrock MoBo.

if I were the OP i'd return the mobo and get a refund and get either an Asus or MSI mobo as those seem to be 2 of the best brands from my experience

especially from ASRock unfortunately. so many bad stories i've heard about their stuff

Yikes, didn't actually check a review until others mentioned it. Seems like a really problematic mobo. Could very likely be two defective ones in a row.

Didn't ASUS buy ASRock recently?

i googled it and it looks like ASRock never accepted ASUS' offers as I only got articles about the offer didn't find any saying it happened

O.o Do newer motherboards need to be grounded? My current computer has the motherboard screwed to a block of wood and I've never had issues. Also, as best I can tell theres no lead from the mobo where you even could ground it.

I only went with the mobo because it was recomended by Tom's Hardware. Damnit.

This sounds a lot like the CPU heatsink was not properly seated with the CPU or you might not have apply the gel at all. When the CPU is heated up very quick, it shut itself off almost instantly.

Just a suggestion, and I do this every day. Un-plug EVERYTHING that you can possibly. Just plug in your MOBO, CPU, 1 Stick of Ram. See if it comes on that way. Then begin plugging in one peripheral (ie: USB, DVD, HDD, etc...) and see if you can track down what the fault might be. Also, I would try putting it on a dry surface outside the case and see if you can get it to boot that way. If it boots outside the case, then I would say that you are having a problem with grounding on the case.

Hope this helps.

Don't take everything as gold they say over there. I've seen so many rouge suggestions that they gave out, don't know if some of them are trying to "troll" people suggesting crap parts or just stupid enough.
