$3 bowl fetches million$

NEW YORK (AP) ? A rare Chinese bowl bought at a tag sale for $3 has sold at a New York auction for more than $2.22 million.

The 1,000-year-old bowl was part of the opening session of Sotheby's fine Chinese ceramics and works of art auction Tuesday.

Sotheby's says it was sold to a London dealer for $2.225 million, far above the presale estimate of $200,000 to $300,000.

The person who put the bowl up for auction bought it at a tag sale in 2007 and had it displayed in the living room for several years before becoming curious about its origins and having it examined.

The bowl is 5 inches in diameter, white in color and from the Northern Song Dynasty.

Needless to say, that's a steal. It's amazing how little simple items can no one ever considers like this can be worth millions.

Knew someone who bought a vase for $50 at a yard sale and sold on ebay for $1500. Not nearly as much as this bowl...but shows people do not know what they have.

most people who buy old items don't have a clue what they have... they don't do the research to find out, usually its just "oh that looks neat" or "that would look great in my curio cabinet" etc etc etc.... :)

Would be good if you had an eye for this stuff like antiques dealers. They go to fairs around the country and theres usually a few pieces out of everything there that sell for not much and can fetch alot more at auction.

imagine if you had it appraised and got that excited it slipped out your hands and it broke, would be like omg wtf

$2.225 MILLION? For a bowl? Are people going crazy? Okay, so it's a thousand years old, but I still wouldn't pay more than $10 for it even after being told that.
