Pepsi rolls out a new shape for bottle

Recommended Posts

NEW YORK (AP) -- Pepsi is rolling out a new shape for its 20-ounce bottle for the first time in about 17 years.

The new bottle has a contoured bottom half that appears easier to grip, and the wraparound label is shorter so that more of the drink is exposed. The change follows a number of splashy moves in the past year by PepsiCo to improve results for its namesake soda, including a multiyear deal to sponsor the Super Bowl halftime show and a wide-ranging deal with pop star Beyonce.

PepsiCo Inc., based in Purchase, N.Y., has been working to revitalize the brand after losing market share to Coca-Cola Co. in recent years.

Andrea Foote, a PepsiCo spokeswoman, said the new 20-ounce bottle is part of the company's ongoing update of marketing and packaging materials for the cola. The single-serve bottles, which are widely sold in coolers at drugstores and other retailers, will begin rolling out in April. The new shape will also be used for the 16-ounce bottles, which aren't as common, as well as Diet Pepsi, Pepsi Max and Pepsi Next.

Foote said it will take a year or two before the new bottles entirely replace the current bottles, which she says were introduced in 1996.

"The engineers have to go to all the plants and convert the lines," Foote said. The new bottles will first appear in the New York area, then roll out to Chicago, parts of California and Florida.

Come on Pepsi, you lost the 1980's cola war. You lost the 1990s cola skirmish. Just go home.

As of January 2012, 22 of PepsiCo's product lines generated retail sales of more than $1 billion each,[3] and the company's products were distributed across more than 200 countries, resulting in annual net revenues of $43.3 billion. Based on net revenue, PepsiCo is the second largest food & beverage business in the world. Within North America, PepsiCo is ranked (by net revenue) as the largest food and beverage business.

Yeah, PepsiCo, you losers, just shut up shop already. :woot:

You do know that the cola division of Pepsi sells less than Cocacola? Pepsi has its hands in more markets than just soft-drinks, such as Lay's chips, that allows it to be more profitable.

You don't shut up shop because a competitor out sells you.

You'll also noticed I used PepsiCo, I am aware of the difference between the corp and the product.

i prefer 7up than Sprite, but here Sprite are lot more popular than 7up.

I never knew that Quaker is part of Pepsi Co,

i wonder how it would taste when you try to mix Quaker with Pepsi Cola ?

Competition is a good thing. Sadly, the cola market is a duopoly so it is already not working fully in the best interest of consumers. We should be encouraging more competitors not less!

Looks top heavy. If they are going to change things they should start with that ugly logo.

Well you have to look at this : To see that it is a lot better off than it was.

Return to the 1940's?

Not to mention their logo people know without any Text World Wide... so why change it too much?

Company changes something about product?

Man, I can't wait to hear all the experienced marketing executives share their opinions on internet comment threads!

I actually kind of dig using the colon as a separator in the oldest logos. Nowadays it'd have a geeky kind of feel to it.

If you ever get around to try this coke from Fentiman's, don't hesitate. Since a few years available in the UK and rolling out in Germany now...

Going back to any other coke is like comparing a freshly made stone-oven pizza with a frozen one.

I'm hooked... :)

An all new Pepsi variety ... Pepsi Porridge!

That wouldn't be pleasant, so I think I'll stick with my favourite (since 1993) Pepsi Max ... Maximum taste, no sugar!

Looks like a cost cutting measure. The smaller section at the bottom, probably allows them the put less drink in the bottle, the smaller label at the top means they save money on labels and ink.

As others have said, pepsi should just shut up shop and go home.

I hate it when you go to a shop and the only drinks they have are Pepsi. Often the are offering a "free" drink with a meal too. I never take the free/dicsounted Pepsi. If they are selling them I'll bring my own can of coke when I go into those shops, and point to it and say NO I bought my own!
