Medical marijuana smell makes neighbors sick

Recommended Posts

PORTLAND, OR ? A Southeast Portland couple says their neighbors? medical marijuana plants are making them sick, and they want the city to step in and do something about it.

?They're too close. They're way too close for this to be happening,? Gloria Peterson told KATU last week. ?There needs to be some sort of zoning regulation that there has to be some sort of distance, I believe, between a marijuana grow and a neighbor.?

So what can they do about it? Does anyone in Oregon enforce rules about the smell of medical marijuana?

The answer, as far as we can tell, is no.

Portland Police, city hall, the Department of Environmental Quality and Multnomah County Health Department all said on Monday that they couldn?t do anything about it.

There is a ?noisome odors or vapors? ordinance in Chapter 8, Section 36 of Portland City Code. It says ?No person shall burn upon any premises or in any street, alley or other place, any animal or vegetable substance which shall create an offensive or noxious odor.?

KATU called police about that city rule. They sent us to City Hall, who then sent us to the Multnomah County Health Department. A spokesperson said their inspectors investigate stinky smells, but not marijuana. The county health department sent us right back to police.

About 53,000 people carry medical marijuana cards in Oregon.

One of my sort of dorm-mates smokes from time to time. Even though I never even tried it I don't really mind the smell (and the other guys don't mind either). Regular cigarettes or sigars are waaaaay worse.

I live in Harlem, NYC and I can smell it everywhere and it even comes through my vents. Not a great smell, but if you want to avoid the smells of others then you must live on your own LARGE tract of land. I know, not possible for most people so we all need to realize that we can't have everything our own way. Living in close quarters with others means HAVING to deal with, tollerate the others. I dislike tabacco smell MUCH more than marjiana but living in a large city means having to share.

Have a great day.

Being a medical user in Cali. Ive had the people next door to my house complain (renters). The local police came out, checked my paperwork and left. They called the police the next day and the police told them exactly this "It is his legal right under the laws of California to use his medicine IN HIS HOME. Your problem with the smell is just that YOUR PROBLEM."

Sure I could live my life doped up on oxy, to make them happy but why? What I do inside my home is my own business, I cant stand the smell of Squid and Fish Stew that they make 2x a week, but its what they are doing inside their house so its their business.

Well.. To me this isn't any different than loud music then.. have all the fun you want.. when it starts affecting me.. stop.. If what you are doing effects others because of the nature of what you are doing (loud music, smell) then you should be the one to correct the issue.. However, it sounds like they are just being "those people".

With that said.. if smelled it.. i might come over and bring a few pizzas.. :)

I smoke pot occasionally, but have always hated the smell of pot, it's just nasty.

Cigarettes and cigars smell fine though.

Well I don't find tobacco to have a smell really, and cigars have a very pleasant smell imo, and I don't even smoke them.

Last Friday someone in our building cooked what I hope was cabbage, but smelled like two homeless people who haven't bathed in a year, and the smell was horrible all day. But again, I live in a shared space so I didn't call someone and complain.

I don't like smelling neighbors smoking it either.

Makes me nauseous.

Doesn't smoking marijuana help with nausea? How ironic. :shifty:

IDK what you all are smoking but I think it smells great. Smells WAY better than cigarettes.

Exactly. I've never smoked either of them but I find tobacco to have a much more offensive odour.

Guess a lot of people missed the very first sentence, where they complain the small of the PLANTS are bothering them, they do not even mention the smoke.

Which is way more stupid IMO.

right! the plants have a really strong smell, but it's not bad... i go walking in the everglades/nature areas a lot and you can smell it pretty strong some times from a pretty good distance. (it grows like weeds here, literally, but it's horrible quality so no one picks the buds/flowers or cuts it down)

Not sure what the plant smells like, but going on experience of other plants, I think it's safe to say that it can smell a lot stronger then someone smoking in their home/on their property since the chances are they'll have a large amount of the plant growing at once to sustain their requirements.

With that said, the smell of smoke from marijuana differs from person to person. Some like it, some hate it, some think it smells fruity while others think it smells like old wet socks. It's one of them smells that you can react to even if a person has lost their sense of smell.
