Disney Shuts Down LucasArts, Cancels Star Wars 1313 And Star Wars: First Assault

Disney has laid off the staff of LucasArts and cancelled all current projects.

Staff were informed of the shutdown this morning, according to a reliable Kotaku source. Some 150 people were laid off, and both of the studio's current projects--Star Wars: First Assault and Star Wars 1313--were cancelled.

This comes after weeks and months of rumors involving the studio, which was acquired by Disney last fall. In September, LucasArts put a freeze on all hiring and product announcements, which many staff saw as the beginning of the end. Today, it's official: the longrunning studio is no more.

holy ****, Lucasarts was a MASSIVE part of my childhood. Gutted for the 150 people that got laid off. Doubly so that Starwars 1313 is now dead.

Why would they spend so much...only to close down one of the two studios they acquired :/

Very, very unfortunate for all those involved. Not a large Star Wars game player myself but 1313 was looking good.

Can we finally get Cars 3 now? It's clearly what everybody is waiting for!

After Cars 2 I'll pass.

It's most likely that they shut down the studio BECAUSE they spent so much on it.

Well Disney had to make sure they didn't break tradition and actually make any good games.

this cause Disney has such a great history of making good games  . I guess we can kiss any hope of a mature themed Star Wars game from ever coming out again. It would be nice to think somebody at Disney would say hey let's license a Battlefront 3 to DICE/EA and all they have to do is rip off BF4 completely and just put in Star Wars stuff and it will sell bazillions, but that's too much like what people want so let's do the exact opposite.

They shut it down because they don't even have a script for the new Star Wars movies.

They can make any game with any good studio and they won't spend money with wages and benefits to make games that have nothing to do with the new series.

It's not that the product is going to die... It's just that the company has to be objective and take care of the timing and marketing procedures. All of George Luca's companies were a complete mess.

That sucks.. why would they want to do that?

Maybe Disney got mad about them changing it all the time lol

I would say, because this is how corporations nowaday work - take over and take down.

R.I.P.

Though their golden days were long over.

I hope Telltale games grabs the rights to their other adventure games. It would awesome to see new Grim Fandango game, or Day of the tenticle styled game

Wow. LucasArts has better cred than Disney's games by far. Shutting it down is a huge mistake... What the heck do we have to expect now in terms of games???

LucasArts was a shadow of the company it used to be. It hadn't been relevant for years and while Star Wars 1313 looked promising it clearly wasn't enough to warrant keeping the studio open and I'm surprised it lasted this long. My hope is that the Star Wars franchise will be given to game developers who can really make the most of it. First on my list would be a AAA remake of / sequel to Tie Fighter.
