Torolol Posted April 5, 2013 Share Posted April 5, 2013 SpywareBlaster only relevant if you're still using browser that utilize ActiveX, as it can't block any other kind of plug-ins or browser extension. Other thing that SpywareBlaster do is put list of 'known' sites into: - browser's 'Restricted Sites' list (for IE) or - 'disallowed cookies site' list (for FF or its derivatives) , this one works for browser that recognized by SpywareBlaster, there other program that can do this too. Didn't take note of the date :p Only discovered it when I went to update it after forgetting about it for quite sometime. AVG is terrible. Get MSE or Avast. Do people evne still use SpywareBlaster? It seems useless in this day and age, just like Spybot from what I've read. I still use it and install it on the PCs I built for my relatives. Doesn't run in background as it is just basically some blocklists. I guess the lists should be still relavent as they are being maintained. ^ I'd be afraid it would conflict with my AVG anti-virus. MBAM ftw, not for the bias, because until I find something that works better for free, that's where I'm staying, although, YMMV. Not saying I hate the product, it's great for n00bs and whatnot, but not for the advanced user. It just uses the built-in features of IE, Firefox and Chrome, also Windows stuff like the HOSTS file and I believe registry for ActiveX blocking. I remember back in Win95 days, I used some script that populates the IE Restricted Sites list. That time there was some problem that a large Restricted Sites list slowed down surfing. To the person who said he'd be afraid to use it along with AVG. I'd be WAY more afraid to use AVG than Spywareblaster. Can't say that. Not any human brain. Only a trained human brain that has interest in maintaining a PC is the best tool. I know some of my relatives just want to watch Korean dramas on the PC and they downloaded Qvod and Funshion then 'Next' through the installation and ended up with all sorts of adware/bloatware. Most people just treat the PC as a tool, I find a PC is kind of like a pet (I run CCleaner to clean the junk, schedule trim and defrag, run a quick scan when MSE complains etc). I was actually refering to an old IE version slowing down due to a large Restricted Sites list. But Enhanced Protected Mode is a good point. Actually I never thought about the relevance of SpywareBlaster and sometimes I actually forgot about it as it never slow down my PC or nag me.
