Adam Orth:'I don't get the drama' over 'always-on' Xbox

i really do not get the drama either, i would venture to say a large percent of all the consoles that are out there right now are connected to the internet at all times. This is not much different, and to be honest its an evolution of services rendered.

Sim City says hey.

Imagine everyone on launch day all trying to connect to xbox live at once, no connection to live, can't play any games.

I am guessing this is either intentional marketing tactic or this guy will be without a job soon.

Vacuum cleaner comment was stupid. Power is much more stable than internet connectivity.

In last 6 years, I've lost power at least 4-5 times a year (minor and major) whereas I remember only 1 Internet outage. I don't think you can generalize.

Is bound to happen.

I remember when Blizzard launched Diablo 3, as online game only. Of course they couldn't cope with the demand during the initial launch days. And I myself got booted out of the game right when I played against the final boss in the game, due to a server restart. After that, I just felt they never get a dime from me anymore.

Don't see the fuss at all.

I can only think of a couple of times since Xbox Live launched in 2002 when it's been down.

has nothing to do with xbox live being up and down if rumors are correct if you disconnected from your ISP after 3 mins the game stops ... THAT'S the big deal

You know, I'm fairly sure Xbox Live already exists, and already has millions of consoles connected to it.

What if the internet goes down.. what if you take your Xbox on a trip with you that doesn't have internet.. what if you want to play xbox in your car..

This guy is a dumbass - not everyone has the luxury of 24x7 internet/power, whatever the case may be. There's a difference between being connected and always connected. I hope he gets grilled by Microsoft.

Why does the title of this say MS as if it's an official MS statement instead of the name of the guy who said it...

oh right....

Mobile broadband or use your phone as an ad hoc wifi spot....problem ?

Always-on is outright stupid. Either that guy is trolling or Microsoft has lost it.

Do you even know what always on is ? because most of your electroncis is always on already, and the PS4 will also be always on.

Shouldn't f***ing have to with single player games, christ. What happens if someone has a low monthly data allowance, in the UK 250/500Mb a month is the average cap.

It won't require always on internet though.

Yeah, that would work.. but all that just to play online.. Why would I want to buy something like that and pay monthly just for my console to have an "always on" connection.. yeah that is a problem..

Yes, it is a solution that works.. but this shouldn't have to come to that.

Also, I wouldn't want it to use my bandwidth.. Mobile Broadband is pricey..

I am sure he will be (unless this was deliberate ploy from marketing) because the Xbox team has been very secretive about their plans so far. FWIW he never said "always connected" but "always on" (at least in those tweet snapshots).

Translation: **** what consumers want, we'll tell them what they want.

Always on is bull****. All but the most loyal MS/xbox fanboys know this.

Which of my electronics?

PC? No. Laptop? No. Consoles? No. Microwave oven? No. Fridge? No. TV? No. UPS? No. Vacuum cleaner? No.

Heck, I can even use apps and games on my phone without connection and/or authenticating anywhere online.

Don't confuse "Always On" with "Internet based DRM". I wouldn't mind always on. Updates happening without my intervention is a huge plus! I dont play my XBox as often as I'd like so when I do I have to sit there and wait for all the updates to come down. Always on would save me from having to wait for console/game updates.

That's a weird definition for "always on". My PS3 already wakes up about 4am to download any available update, but waking up for 5 minutes is not "always on" by any stretch.
