Strange Power Supply/Sleep Issue

Recommended Posts

So as I was leaving to go out, I accidentally hit sleep instead of shutdown when I was turning off my computer. Now normally you would think it would turn back on when you hit keys on your keyboard or anything, but the keyboard and monitor went dark and refused to respond. In fact the entire computer seemed to be "turned off" and when i tried to restart or shutdown the computer through the hardware switches, nothing happened. After ripping my hair out trying to figure out the issue, including resetting the onboard motherboard memory (through the switch and the onboard battery) through strange deductions of cable switching and other insanites, the only way i can turn it on now is by first switching the power switch on the power supply off until the lights on the mobo dim out completly, switching it on and then hitting the power button. When I restart, it seems to be fine, but if i shutdown the computer i have to go through that process again. I've changed the bios to the newest one, and replugged the cables and anything else i could think of...

I'm running on windows 8, SeaSonic X750 Gold 750W, 16gb of corsair ram, P8 Z68-V Pro mobo, and a GTX570. I doubt its the power supply as this computer is fairly recent, just over a year old.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Try to take it apart one by one. Take HDDs out, if you have onboard video, use that. Most likely it is underpowering your system. It's like it needs a jumper to start it.

Maybe it's time for a new motherboard and processor? That's what it sounds like....or could be a bad windows install/driver conflict. I'm banking on new motherboard/processor for sure though. I mean that's what the symptoms seem to be pointing toward. Something may have happened, for example, where I live, we have power surges a lot,....seen many a motherboard and/or processor die, as well as power supplies. Either way, though, I hope you get it straightened out. If you can RMA it or have any other type of warranty, I suggest using that as a first option. Seems helpful when I use it, I know that much. ;)

I just tested it with another power supply, with only the mobo/cpu/vidcard. Starts up every time, even though its an older power supply (Corsair 620W). As much as I hate to think of a brand like SeaSonic failing on me, I think its what happened. Strange that it would fail on me like this though, while accidentally going into sleep mode instead of shutdown.
