Memorable things about Windows XP RIP

Recommended Posts

The only thing I really miss about Windows XP are the custom visual styles. There were so many to choose from and I went through a "kid in a candy store" phase where I'd find a better visual style every time.

Blaster/Sasser worms.

Another memorable thing was how much slower it felt compared to Windows 2000. The OS finally became tolerable when SP2 was released.

Good riddance, Windows XP. I won't miss you.

-Visual style (i didn't mind Luna as much as many do, my favorite was the silver variant). I used to customize a lot but then gave up later on.

-Stability compared to 98/Me

-SP2 onwards it was a dream.

-Plug&Play with USB :)

Still have quite a few PC's on XP at work. My girlfriends PC at home is also on XP. Although the whole PC will probably be upgraded before the end of XP support.

I remember being very disappointed that Windows XP was just a love child of Windows ME and Windows 2000.

Windows 2000 was a much better OS. But, you couldn't theme it, so the kids paid no mind.

Not every game worked in 2000 which is why I dual booted with ME.

I remember the firewall finally getting better with SP2

XP Media Center was awesome

XP 64 bit was really choppy on my first 64-bit system

XP Tablet edition really didn't go anywhere

And who can forget the Tele-Tubby desktop?

Good memories.

It's been around for so long it's hard to remember the experience (no pun intended) of moving from W98 to XP, but two things stand out most of all...

Stabilty. Compared to W98, XP was rock-solid.

Drivers. Suddenly hardware just seemed to work without too much intervention. Modems, printers, soundcards... things that could be a nightmare to install in W98 were up and running in minutes.

-Windows XP intro I play when I get bored

-Stability SP2 onwards

-Fantastic skinning scene. There's so much great skins being created within a month.

-Last Windows OS to include 3D Pinball Space Cadet

-Plug & Play USB devices, and malware.

Good times... good times

You're kidding, right? I'd be searching for a new job if my employer said that.

some of us have no reason/option due to software validation in our selected sectors, im lucky that we get the finances to replace systems which we are now ensuring come withW7 pro, I have 75 left to do before EOL for Pro. That's IF all software used in my sector (Biomed research) has been validated to run on W7 (thanks FDA, 21CFR compliance), surprisingly a lot of Siemens, Abbott, and other Biomed companies equipment etc is still in progress for validation on post XP. (and sure il look for another job when normal IT positions pay the equivalent that Biomed Research pay me to do my job, e.g never ;))

Ill miss the small footprint, low system specs and general stable, simple problem resolution. Ill not miss hacking windows XP drivers from other dell laptops to retro-install WXPP on new "unsupported" models.

The thing I hated the most about XP is that stupid language bar that automatically enables itself when you install IE8. It almost always gets cut in half by the tray icons.

How something like that can pass quality control is beyond my understanding.

I will never forget my super positive reaction when I first saw XP's signature new taskbar, in a early build/beta back in 1999 or 2000 if I remember correctly. Bigger and colored, different from what we were used to on previews Windows, I found it a great and modern (for its time) update :)

At the moment i'm remotely connected into 2 XP machines. They are slow as ****. Mostly because of their slow ass internet and the fact with me connected to them their cpu is maxed out at 100%

One of the slow machines actually had 1GB of ram but had a slow CPU that was using up over 50% on my gotoassist alone.

To give you an idea how slow the computer was.

On that machines I did the following

Installed the latest 6 Windows updates

Did a quick scan with malwarebytes

Ran CCleaner

uninstalled some toolbars and a stupid pc optimizer.

Ran patchmypc and updated 4 applications.

Total time : 4 HOURS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Only billed her for one
