Yoshida: "We hate to see all PS4 games being FPS"

Sony has proven itself over the course of the PS3's lifecycle that it's not afraid to try something different and target different markets.

ModNation Racers, LittleBigPlanet, MAG and the likes of Journey or Tokyo Jungle on the PSN Store are all names that - while not huge sellers like Uncharted - show that Sony is willing to try new things.

This will remain for the PS4, it seems, with Sony's Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida claiming in an interview in the latest issue of Edge that not all games will be targeted at FPS players.

When asked about why the importance of the PS4 reveal's first game being decidely cutesy game Knack, Yoshida said "Yeah, it was pretty intentional.

"Mark's idea was like, "What about a Crash Bandicoot for PS4?" When he suggested the concept of Knack, we were like, "Yeah, we hate to see all the PS4 games being FPS or action-adventure or very photorealistic" - you know, big-budget blockbuster games."

Yoshida added, "We know that people like these games, but these are not the only kinds of games that people can have fun with."

We're glad to see Sony isn't losing that sense of inventiveness with the PS4 then.

FPS is relatively easy to do. You don't need much AI, sound, etc loaded at once so you don't have as much to worry about with memory limitations and whatnot.

Since PS4 doesn't have memory limitations it'll be interesting to see what happens...though I don't expect to see anything amazing overnight.

Guess it is nice to have confirmation they plan on sticking to the same approach they did with the PS3, but I never had any real fear that would not be the case.

Not sure if you are serious, but that is one of the definitions of it, yes.

FPS is probably my least favourite genre No, actually that would probably be sports sims, but anyway, I am glad to see this.

In my experience FPS seems to attract the worst kind of gamers: either young kids whose mother/father have chucked them a console so they can go out and treat the machine like a baby sitter or borderline psychotic bigots.

* Dishonored 2 (somewhat confirmed with PS4)

* BioShock prequel (the fall of Rapture)

* Crysis 4 (Lets' see what CryTek can do with their engine)

* DOOM 4 (last chance for id software to stay in the game. This will either make or break them for good.)

This statement by Sony seems like a captain obvious statement. probably more of a "drip" comment to keep the hype from dying off.

I'd go for all of those, though another Crysis would REALLY have to step it up as far as the writing team goes (for me to purchase anyways).

Personally I only like FPS games on PC. I am hoping to see more RPG style games or TPS (MG:S) games for PS4. I'd really like to see some hack-n-slash diablo style games, or hell even full MMOs would be kickass.

My hope is the PS4 can become a solid replacement for much of my PC Gaming.

Sadly FPS games are where all the money is at on consoles. A billion and a half people will buy a new COD game every year, and until that fad dies down, they're going to keep pumping that crap out year after year.

I would also hate to see the ecosystem for the PS4 become just a FPS machine, being that I do not like to play FPS games on consoles, i just prefer to use a keyboard and mouse for those games.

I am honestly sick of FPS's... that is one thing that got me out of gaming... everything went FPS... missing the old days of games like Mario, Sonic, Blackthorne, Populous, Civilization, etc

Yes, but it also attracts plenty of stable people. The popularity attracts the bad crowd as much as the content.

Not that I'm, err, stable but I'm not borderline psychotic or a bigot as far as I can tell.

It's a crowded market though. As long as you're compared to Call of Duty or Battlefield you're not likely to make the big bucks. Not many want to compete with those.

The MMO market on the other hand has a new game and three cancelled ones every month that everyones already forgotten about the next ;)

What genres are released/bought is up to the developers and the consumers, unless Sony is suggesting they have control over what's put on their system (not so open platform as they are implying, if that's the case). I don't care if there are 90 FPS games and one game of every other genre. What matters to me is whether or not that game is good.

I find it highly annoying the articles that are coming out, which are basically promising to solve every problem people had with the last generation. I'm not buying it, and nobody else should either.

Consider how many of those fall under 'action'...just like FPS.
