New Hum Posting Machine !

Recommended Posts

A newer Asus laptop fell on my doorstep today !

Full high def resolution LED screen

2.2 mHz Intel i7 CPU

8 gigs of RAM DDR3

750 gig hard drive.

I'll post pictures when I can find them.

Came from some outfit in Texas.

Now for the problems ...

There is NO Install DVD ... just the empty envelope.

Windows wants me to Activate today, and there is NO product key provided.

Oh -- one other thing, the Windows 7 installed says it is NOT genuine.

I plan to switch out the hard drive, sooner or later, and Install Windows Ultimate 64.

I'm having trouble finding the contact-seller info.

What's on the paperwork is not the name on Buy.com, and my model has apparently disappeared.

Thoughts & advice welcome.

I am posting from this cool but slightly disabled machine now.

Cheers ...

If it's a genuine OEM installation, product key should be on a COA sticker on the device's underbelly or under the battery (which you'll have to remove to find out). Otherwise I'd regret to say you've been royally shafted.

It's not clear from your post, but it sounds like this was bought from a, shall we say, less than reputable retailer?

^ Could be. This laptop is supposed to be 'refurbished' -- dosen't seem they checked it over too well.

Oh, and they other guy is right -- Product Key is under the laptop --- I am too excited to remember that it's the same with my netbook.

Here's hoping the Key works ....

Which version of Windows is on the computer? Windows 8 they don't give a product sticker anymore.

Did it come with windows 7 installed or did you downgrade it yourself?

You can browse the internet; find the OEM key and certificate used by ASUS to activate Windows 7 and if the install is legit; it should activate with no problem.

Model'?

Is an Asus 55SL

There are 2 stickers -- the original OEM, scratched out

And the 'refurbished' product key -- this is the one that Activated it.

As I said, I am going to replace the hard drive with 7200 rpm, and Install Ultimate, soon.

Many thanks for all the replies.

If you can, just dump the CD drive for the 5200 drive, and put in an SSD as the boot drive.

There may be 2 hard drive 'bays' -- I have not opened up the HD cover yet.

I do have a Crucial SSD picked out, if there are 2 HD spots. ;)

I am awaiting delivery of the new Western Digital 7200 rpm hard drive from Amazon.

Hum on his new PC:

Ie17FZ6.gif

First thing I noticed is the little "genius" was using the mouse wrong, and then his thumbs up just killed me and I had to explain my spontaneous laughter.

Apparently I'm just as much of a "genius" as he is, the mouse is right, it's just designed REALLY strangely.

Don't order a 7200 rpm drive, honestly, it's not really worth the effort to upgrade from 5400 rpm. The best investment you can make for any modern computer is a SSD ;)

Congratulations man, keep the news coming up! :D according to the model that laptop has

Intel? Core? i7 2670QM/2630QM Processor

NVIDIA? GeForce? GT 555M 2GB DDR3 VRAM

And that means good gaming on it :D

^ Thanks.

What the heck .... I thought this was 4 cores ... why do I see 8 :|

Its quad core with 4 cpu threads. Consider it 4.4 core

For every logical processor there is, a graph is displayed ;)

In Windows 8 they are combined to one graph (but you can choose to display each logical processor seperatly).
