Baby milk rationed in UK over China export fear

Recommended Posts

Retailers in the UK are rationing sales of powdered baby milk because of a surge in demand in China.

Danone, the manufacturer of Aptamil and Cow and Gate baby milk powder, said most supermarkets were introducing a restriction of two cans per customer.

It said the limit was to prevent some individuals from bulk-buying baby milk for "unofficial exports".

Retailers were also capping sales of Nestle's SMA milk, despite the company saying there were no stock shortages.

Danone said in a statement: "We understand that the increased demand is being fueled by unofficial exports to China to satisfy the needs of parents who want Western brands for their babies."

They stop the average person from taking advantage of the situation so those big corporations can?

or we could just make baby formula in countries that aren't China also? this is a problem with making every darn thing in China... you need to have more then one source for stuff to ensure supply...

or we just you know just breast feed kids and breast feed them longer... never got why people push baby formula so much when you have a natural supply at hand... only time you should absolutely need formula is when the mother has a health problem or something is wrong that prevents feedings....

Maybe I misunderstand your post, or I'm confused, it seems you think China is the one exporting, when I believe they are the one experiencing a shortage... hints why UK stores are putting a limit up to stop sales *to* China for mass profits.

*edit - granted if you only read the poorly worded title then responded, I understand.

not every mother can breast feed you know. some have great difficulty with it, some have issues after the birth that keeps them in the hospital and their milk can dry up (it only takes a few days).

the issues is that Chinese milk is contaminated, or was contaminated in the past so parents are reluctant to buy and use chinese milk powders, so they are buying from UK where it's produced under license and to a stricter standard. more safety checks are done.

don't know why you don't understand? China is one of the largest makers of Baby formula, they could easily fill their own requirements if parents would go the breast feeding route, and more countries should step up production if its really needed, but they shouldn't need to use it unless they absolutely have to...

It's not made in China...

once again..... china is one of the largest makers of it, there is a reason why china has to import it, why? because a lot of them are coming out as tainted... if other countries would make more of it there wouldn't be a shortage...

I was replying to your idea that everything is made in China.

I don't understand what you are talking about either.

How does, a demand for foreign made formula = a shortage = don't make everything in China = reason why UK retailers are limiting a purchase to curb unofficial export?

Alladaskill is probably right in his assumption. You didn't read past the thread title.

Parents should be breast feeding their children anyway.

Not every can breast feed.

It's actually a very complicated procedure that not everyone is capable of doing, your comment seems to be that those who use formula are choosing to do, but most of the time this is not the case.

Seems to be some confusion as what is going on here as well.

The Chinese, who normally happily make their own baby formula, have a had a contamination issue, rendering a huge chunk of their produced formula un-consumable.

People have been buying up all the supplies in the UK and illegally been exporting it to China for a massive markup, causing panic buying and product shortages in the UK.

It's not a complicated procedure, it needs some patience and perseverance until everything starts to settle down. Most women are perfectly capable of breastfeeding.

This is a good example why breastfeeding rates need to be higher, it's better for the baby and there's no need to rely on formula companies.

You clearly have no idea what you're talking about.

Why do you say that? It's the truth.

I completely disagree with you.

There's hundreds of reasons why a woman can't breast feed and your statement "It's not a complicated procedure, it needs some patience and perseverance until everything starts to settle down. Most women are perfectly capable of breastfeeding." is actually quite insulting.

Many woman suffer complications during the birth that causes their milk never to flow, or they can be to ill to begin breast feeding. Some women are just flat unable to breast feed what-so-ever.

Please don;t take my word for this, my mother in law is a midwife and my wife has just had a baby which she is unable to breastfeed.

Please, enlighten us.

Please see my post above.

Yes, there is a clear benefit to those that can breast feed but stating "Every one should" is, at best, plain insensitive.

The initial contamination was in 2008 but the Chinese have been bulk buying imported formula ever since and a recent scare on hormone levels in cattle has caused a surge.

Like I said, most women are perfectly capable of breastfeeding, not all. There are exceptions.

The exception is a lot more than people think and it really is a complicated procedure.

Anyway, sorry for continuing the off topic ranting.

The real issue here is once again the media is whipping people up in to frenzy and inducing panic buying as it always does.

Not every can breast feed.

True but i bet the number of those who 'can't is less than those who 'won't' - still, it's practically impossible to do in today's society, there isn't enough time for women who tend to be working too and the poor men in their lives get little or no boob time as it is

True that.

As much as i'm fighting the case for a fair chunk of women being unable to breast feed, i bet there's an equal chunk that are to damn lazy or want to smoke/drink again.

That is disgusting.
