Baby milk rationed in UK over China export fear

Recommended Posts

Please see my post above.

Yes, there is a clear benefit to those that can breast feed but stating "Every one should" is, at best, plain insensitive.

That's the exception, not the rule. As I said, parents should be breastfeeding their children - if they can't then that's a different matter but most parents move on to baby milk product for convenience. That's without going into the unethical business practices employed by some of the manufacturers of baby milk products.

I don;t mean to come of as a dick obviously.

Kinda raw because my missus had a very very difficult birth which left her unable to breastfeed and people/professionals have been laying the guilt trip on her ever since, until they read her medical notes that is.

Which is sort of why this topic really ***** me off. Nothing personal on you guys or your opinions you understand.

Fair enough. My statement was simply that parents should breastfeed their children. Obviously if a mother can't breastfeed then that isn't an option. It's like me saying that parents should encourage their children to walk to school and you saying "what about my disabled child in a wheelchair?" - it's hardly fair.

Breast milk contains stem cells and white blood cells from the mother that offer the child the best chance of survival. Baby milk products are nutritionally sound but they don't provide the same protection. Parents should maintain breastfeeding for as long as possible and shouldn't stop simply for convenience.

Like I said, most women are perfectly capable of breastfeeding, not all. There are exceptions.

Maybe so, but why should a woman do that if she doesn't want to? It should be a choice.

Not every can breast feed.

It's actually a very complicated procedure that not everyone is capable of doing, your comment seems to be that those who use formula are choosing to do, but most of the time this is not the case.

What an absolute steaming pile of cow poot. You don't have a clue what you're talking about.

99% of women can quite happily breast feed. It's a VERY simple procedure involving just putting the baby to your boob and NOTHING ELSE, so I dunno where you got your complicated nonsense from. Sure, there are some women who can't, but NOT the norm by a long long way.

The only reason Chinese women don't is greedy corporations told them it was bad for their babies and it's gotten ingrained into them. We had similar problems in the UK back in the 70's when baby formula became all the rage, but we've gotten over that now and most women realise the truth.

Breast is best.

this is not about supply problems. I read the other day (can't be arsed to google but it's out there) that "Western" baby milk formula in china is becoming like a social status thing. so parents wants those brands for their babies. so there's no other rationale behind it.

and theres no reason that western companies doesn't want to capitalize profits from such 'thing', who cares about UK babies, they can have all those healthy breast feed. ;)

You speaking from experience then, i take it you have breastfed a child youself

Its not a simple procedure, some babies wont take breast at all, you also have to find a comfortable position for both the mother and the baby and one that is comfortable for a long period of time

You will find the only one spouting cow poo here is yourself

And the reason china want the milk is because the milk formula that is produced over there contained chemicals in it that ended in infant deaths

all the rationing is doing is stopping regular parents buying milk they need

Usually at the start of the month i buy 6 cartons of milk which then lasts for the month now i have to travel to the shop 2 - 3 times a month to get the milk

I'd say it's you that doesn't know what he's talking about. While breastfeeding statistics for new mothers in the UK have improved over the last few decades, the numbers drop off significantly by the six week mark. At the six month mark only a tiny proportion of mothers are still breastfeeding. Additionally, it's not uncommon for breastfeeding mothers to use formula to top-up feeds when necessary.

As for "breast is best", it's a catchy phrase but when you look into it there's very little scientific evidence to support the theory. There are many homespun truths about breastfeeding that seem sensible but there's no actual evidence to back them up. It's certainly important for babies to feed on the colostrum that the breasts produce at first but beyond that I'm not aware of any definitive study that proves the benefits of long-term breastfeeding over formula feeding. Most midwives and breastfeeding experts will encourage breastfeeding but, quite sensibly, acknowledge that there's no need to be dogmatic about it and will recommend formula if breastfeeding isn't possible.

The fact is that many mothers do have problems breastfeeding and blanket statements such as the one theyarecomingforyou made are unhelpful and offensive.

How about the son of 2 nurses, the father of 2 children, the uncle and great uncle of 26 kids, and the holder of a degree in child care. Would that do you?

Some women cannot breastfeed for medical reasons, that happens and I don't dispute it. However, it is NOT the norm and quite uncommon. Most women that don't breastfeed, do it for social reasons and no other. They just make up medical reasons so they don't get bothered by people. It's also complete nonsense that it's difficult to do. It's the most natural thing in the world and comes to women just as easily as trolling does to 4chan idiots.

My wife could not wait to breastfeed but our son would just not take to it

there was no mdeical reason

there was no social reason

he just did not want to do it

Breast is best is a crap phrase to try and make women feel guilty not breastfeeding

I do agree that not breastfeeding so you can smoke/drink again is extremely selfish but sometimes breastfeeding just doe snot happen

My partner couldn't wait to breastfeed but my daughter couldn't latch on properly due to a problem with the muscles around her mouth. We tried all sorts of things including sessions with midwives, visits to breastfeeding clinics, various positions, etc. but couldn't get her to breastfeed. My partner ended up expressing for 6 months which was time consuming and exhausting and it was a relief to everyone when we finally switched to formula.

There are plenty of reasons why women can't breastfeed. Sometimes they're medical and sometimes they're practical (e.g. some women have to return to work for economic reasons). But what do I know, I'm only the son of two teachers ;)

Every mother I've spoken to knows that breastfeeding is considered better and usually they tried but ran into problems. Acting like women are all completely feckless is ignorant and offensive. Pretending that it's so easy and natural isn't right, it can be tough and it's a lot harder for women without any guidance or support. Sure some of these factors might be 'selfish' but I have a hard time criticising them when the person in front of me has been doing everything as perfectly as possible for the good of their child. Fact is, formula milk is fine. Many of us were raised on it completely or since early on and we're fine.

In the past people breastfed because they had to, not because they were superior mother Earth godesses. A lot of women would use a wetnurse if they could.

Women I've spoken to experienced a lot of pain, on top of the fact they just had their tummy or vagina go through a lot of abuse, and they are getting no sleep. Sometimes the child refused to feed, or conversely wanted to feed constantly and was never satisfied. Many women, especially in places like the US, have to go back to work or have other commitments meaning they can't sit about playing milk cow all day long.

Bottle feeding also allows fathers and other families take some of the burden of baby care, and personally I see that bonding as important for the baby too. Newborns are freaking demanding, especially if you end up with two of them. Parents need to balance all these things they try to do for the good of their child and sometimes breastfeeding is too much. Especially when you consider that actually, formula milk is ok, especially after the few weeks or so. People act like not breastfeeding is the same as smoking and drinking during pregnancy.

That's all very well but are you an actual modern day midwife or neonatal nurse? No.

I urge you to do some research before spreading fud, think of the women you are hurting by blatantly refusing to listen to other people.

Not being able to breastfeed is very common. You think i like having to pay out a fortune every month to feed my baby? How do you think my other half felt when she was unable to perform what you're stating is a basic function?

Out of the 'baby cafe' that my missus attends, 8 of the 20 were unable to breastfeed due to complications. That's a fair whack who legitimately can't do what they really would want to do.

One girl had to be hospitalized due to not approaching any one about having trouble breastfeeding because of the stigma attached, a stigma that exists thanks to be people like you who are willing to run their mouth before engaging their brain.

I would like to point out i'm against people formula feeding just because it's the easy way out. This disgusts me.

No surprise that most of the people i know that do this are also the same ones we're paying for to do it.... if you know what i mean ;)

I love bottle feeding my new born daughter, it's the most bonding thing we get to along with bathing.

It also takes a lot of weight off of my missus for a little while, allowing her to get some fresh air and rest. We take it turns at night as well so neither of us really suffered from sleep deprivation.

It is and always should be a choice, I'm not saying women should be forced to do anything they don't want to.

There's no denying it's the best thing for the child though and breastfeeding rates need to continue improving, it's good to educate both men and women to make an informed choice.

I agree with this. I'm not against women CHOOSING not to breast feed, I just object to the ridiculous claims that a lot of women physically CAN'T. The vast majority of them can if they want to.

Not sure how many times i've got to say this but i'll bite again, many women physically can't, maybe try listening to the other people in this thread and learning something.

Learn to type what you mean then... and i quote.

Hmmm what is that i read there? Yes that's right 'A lot' aka 'Many'.

So before attacking others regarding the use of English language (always the poor mans fall back by the way), check yourself first.

I'm guessing you're from a slightly older generation than i as it's people like you we've come across that have caused many of these women issues due to their lack of understanding. Pretty much any recently qualified (or those that have kept up with their reading) neonatal health care professional will agree that many women have issues with being able to breastfeed.
