A Japanese telecoms provider claims to have launched the world's fastest home broadband service.

So-net - the Sony-backed provider - is now offering Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband deals with headline speeds of 2Gb.

The service - only available in Japan - is priced at ?4,980 (?33) per month, with broadband packages available on 24-month contracts.

So-net is currently waiving its ?52,500 (?350) connection fee in a bid to generate interest within the consumer market.

Japan has extensive fibre broadband coverage, with many homes already benefitting from access to 1Gb FTTP broadband.

Relatively few UK homes and businesses have access to a full FTTP connection, with the majority of fibre broadband networks in Britain also using copper cabling.

Earlier this week, BT Strategy Director Sean Williams claimed that the costs of rolling out FTTP broadband across the country are economically prohibitive at present.

I wish we had this in Australia. Fiber has just started rolling out in a (very) limited number of areas, however it's not good value at all at present (30GB a month is about $50 AUD - with fiber speeds, one could use that in a day! 1TB plans are around $140 AUD, and that's on the slower "bronze" option (12/1 Mbps)).

I've seen Windows NT still in use in a few areas of our government. :s

Are there any data caps, is the speed symmetrical, what is the guaranteed speed at any given time, if there is such a clause at all?

Also, what kind of hardware is used/needed for the computer?
