High quality new monitor?

Recommended Posts

Hi. Im searching for a new 1920 x 1080 IPS or/and LED monitor. I am mostly going to see movies on my PC so colors are very important to me and play the occational game. hdmi please (for video purposes). also this monitor is going to be close to me (my face/eyes)

Best quality-to-price ratio. i dont want to go over the top but i dont want a chinese knockoff either. lets see what options are avaliable.

IPS is the way to go if you can spend the extra $300 price tag that goes with it. Dell makes a good one but if you want to save money on them then see if you can see an off brand of them from MicroCenter. I think they have for $399 for a IPS 27 inch.

IPS and LED are not different types of display technology. Modern IPS monitors are all LED ones... The LED is the backlight and IPS is a type of LCD...

Dell Ultrasharps are a good choice. If you have 1080p in mind you want a smaller physical size rather than larger, because the same number of pixels over a larger area just means it's less dense.

I dont know if I want 1080p or 1080i

lol

Im looking at the Dell U2312HM Reviews say it lacks on the dark side. Anyone have this monitor?

As far as I know, blacks are the weakspot of IPS. If you want good blacks you should be looking at monitor with a VA panel like the Philips 241P4QPY. Here's a breakdown of panel types.

Is the price difference worth it?

I've got a U2412M and personally, I think it's one of the best monitors i've used. It's also 16:10 which is nice to have for the desktop and a good gaming monitor (at least for me).

That is your call to make depending on your needs. When I bought my first LCD (and only) in 2010, I wanted great image quality and gaming so I went with IPS (LG W2220P).

It depends; If it is $50 sure, but it is over $9000 then no.

I have 2 U2412Ms and they are indeed fantastic, 1920x1200 trumps 1920x1080 anyday.

Yeeah. That's why movies are released in 16:9 format and majority of games don't support 16:10, leaving you playing with black borders.

Personally I'd say the majority do in my experience - you're right there are exceptions but actually support for it is pretty darn good. I couldn't live the reduced height at 1080p but that's me.

Movies OTOH aren't often 16:9 (or at least the ones I watch) and I see black borders on my TV watching HD content far far more often.

Check out the BenQ XL2420T or the XL2411T. 24" 1080p 120Hz monitors. I see you don't play many games, so maybe 120Hz isn't as important to you as an IPS screen, but they're worth considering.

For now and based on the comments said here, Dell U2312HM looks good but noone has it, it seems

I have 2x U2312HM at work. It has one problem that really annoys me: white areas look inconsistent on it, like there are diagonal lines of grey in the white.

As I mentioned before, tftcentral is the place for reviews: http://www.tftcentra...ell_u2312hm.htm
