Windows 8 - Something I just realized

Recommended Posts

So i've started messign around with metro interface after banishing it for a couple months behind "classic shell". There was something always off about it but i never could put my finger on it. It should be obvious but it's something so in your face that it's easy to overlook

IT'S APPLICATION DRIVEN

Windows has largely been document driven for me for almost the lifetime of usage of it. I can't remember the last time I actually intentionally clicked on the microsoft word icon. I've always clicked on a preexisting document or did a right-click -> new. It might seem like a small change but it fundamentally changes how we interact with the system and i'm not entirely convinced it's for the better. if the desktop went away entirely the documents on your system and even the basic directory structure of windows is largely hidden from view. It would seem that microsoft is intent on locking down the Windows platform... but at what cost?

There's an Explorer app coming in 8.1...

However, to answer your post, an application driven model is exactly what many people need. They don't take care of their files at all now, and you get a irate customer when you tell them their files are gone after they have an accident, and you need to do a re-install. To have the apps take care of the files will be a God send for these people.

I assume you mean RT.. on the "regular" versions the desktop isn't going away, that still works just like before.. you can still file/new to your hearts content. Even if you're on RT though you can still manipulate the file system, there's file managers available for it now, and Microsoft added their own for the next version. Not that they're terribly flexible (in my opinion) being Metro and all, I'll take Explorer any day, but *shrug* there it is. I can see it being the preferred "style" in RT though, it is designed for tablets and all.
