Divx Plus? Any free/good alternatives?

Question

Hi guys, I'm trying to find a video conversion tool for auto converting numerous videos from their current file type into .mkv or a suitable format (For an old Divx connected box)

I have several video converters but they are for specific file types and I read that Divx plus may do the Job but I don't want to fork out for the full version if it's no good.

what say the Software gurus of neowin?

I'm in favour of Handbrake http://handbrake.fr/

I'm sure there are some GPU accelerated tools that might work well for you >.<

I used to use handbrake years ago when I had an iPhone, I didn't think it was very good at the time but that was years ago so I'm sure it's greatly improved, does handbrake have GPU acceleration?

There's no need to pay for any software when there are plenty of free (and much better) alternatives e.g. Freemake Video Converter and Xvid4PSP.

You could even use ffmpeg for this job if you figure out the correct command-line parameters to use.

Seriously, don't bother with Handbrake/re-encoding if all you need is a change of file container to .mkv.

Metafox is a simple as it gets, but mkvtoolnix is equally fast.
