So I THINK I hit a car in a parking lot...

Recommended Posts

the other day i was parked at a supermarket and while i was exiting (backuping up) i hit my brake and it made a weird noise. i was looking thru my rearview and the car behind me was further so i thought i couldnt have hit it so i just drove away thinking it was my brake because i accidently braked hard or something.

two days later, i have recieved a letter from my insurance saying that i have been reported in a accident two days ago about the same time as i was there. my insurance asked me if there was a accident and i couldnt say if there was or there wasnt because i actually didnt see anything (i drove away and saw the car but didnt see any damage or anything, maybe closer there was something).

i did notice that same day that the plastic cover of the towball was missing.

what should i do? i asked my insurance if i could talk to the person of the car and they didnt have the information. i wanted to first apoligize and second ask them what damage has been done. i dont mind having to pay for it but i want to actually know what happened/has been done.

i have 16 days to say i did it and take the blame. if i dont say anything, the blame is on me. if i do say something and say it wasnt me, we go to court.

opinions? suggestions?

If you think you hit something, and somebody reported you for a hit and run... I think it's safe to say you probably hit that car.

Ask your insurance company where the accident was reported and vehicle make/model/color.

no no no, do not mix it up.

someone reported me for a insurance claim. noone has reported me for a hit and run (which is something i actually found surprising but)

Go to the supermarket and ask if you can have a look at the CCTV for that day. Our local Asda let us view it, when my sister had an accident in the car park.

well obviously it would be my fault and if personal were saw that i just went on my business they might claim a police report.....which would worsten the situation.

How would someone have reported you unless they had your tag from your vehicle and witnessed it or had video...

By your statement, it sounds like you hit something. But, I would like to see the video or proof of how they know it was you, before I did anything. And if that means taking it to court, then so be it.

In court, you could say that you do not deny that you may have been involved in an accident, but you yourself are not sure and would like to see evidence to prove it, which you should be afforded the right to see since you and your insurance company are the defendants for the claim.

no, an accident is an accident. If you didn't know you did it, it won't make it worse. You didn't hit it on purpose then drive off, and you didn't hit it by accident then knowingly leave the scene.

Having been the one who got hit, my guess is someone in the parking lot saw it, and left a note. I've gotten a few of those.

So, there's probably no good way out of this for you. On the other hand, if your driving record is pretty decent otherwise, you might be able to just have insurance pay them off and not have your premium go up.

And yes, car parks suck, and with bumpers on modern cars cost $$$$, it's a generally miserable situation.

there was a guy there but as i was looking he didnt even look at me, the other car or my car. if something like this happens, you usually stare at the guy who did it. nothing seemed out of the ordinary so thats why i left.

problem is that i dont have money (or more important time) to go to court for this, unless the bill for me having this "accident" is huge.

but if i lose i would have to pay all the court fines.....

im saying a "accident" as in a action between two cars. I cannot say i had one because i do not know at all if i had one or not.

if i knew i did it and i drove off, it is worst that i doing it and staying. a lot worst.

i have almost no driving record; almost what less than 4 months, and about 1 month with the car/insurance....

like i said, i have no problem paying it. the problem is this actually occured or not.

NO NO NO. never talk to anyone except your insurance company. that's why you pay for insurance. they don't just hand over money to anyone who makes a claim. they actually investigate what happened. be truthful to your insurance company, tell them you don't know if you hit the other car or not. they will try to get proof from the other party, and if they cant, they will fight the claim.

This doesn't sound right at all, if his insurance company sues your insurance company, you shouldn't have to do or pay anything except your insurance bills. No one was hurt, there is no medical claim here. Something sounds totally fishy about the whole situation.

You as an individual wouldn't even be involved in a court case, your insurance company would either pay the other party to settle or if they also felt it did not happen and there was no evidence, they would tell the other persons insurance to take a hike, and if the other persons insurance company felt there was a claim and enough evidence to push the issue, they would sue your insurance company not you.

I don't think you even know how the system works....

Next time, step out and make sure either you hit or you don't. One week after I bought my car, someone in my parking garrage crashed the rear bumper and didn't even leave any note. Such for me, 'cuz there is no camera inside the garrage, so I had to fix it myself. I was so ****ed that someone did that to my new car.

Sorry for being a dick but how could you just drive away when your car made an abnormal noise? I am pretty sure that even with a really small bump, you should've felt something.

Actually, it's still quite possible to end up in court if insurance companies reject claims. If your insurance comes with legal protection, they'll cover the cost of a solicitor, etc, but if you don't have that you're on your own.

One of my co-workers had this happen a while ago. They were at a roundabout and a van in front accidentally reversed instead of setting off forwards, ramming the front of his car. They pulled over, swapped details, etc, and he admitted liability. Then my friend got a phone call from his insurance company saying somebody has accused him of driving into the back of them!! It ended up in court, and he was pretty much going to lose until he found a random CCTV camera that covered the area, and you could just about see the van reversing in it.

Correct. Only deal with your insurance company. You are paying them to be your representative. Do not pay it yourself.
