Yeah, I wonder why these people believe in an all-powerful God, yet can't grasp the idea that he could work through doctors and etc. Doesn't he work through people and circumstances? "mysterious ways" and all?

I hate when people say that. It belittles the skills of the doctors and nurses who worked damn hard to learn their skills. Mysterious ways my backside.

As an atheist I truly dislike other atheists who refuse to accept the beliefs of theists. Tolerance goes both ways.

the parents back then did what they could with the technology and knowledge of the time.

Quite right; so you'll agree that being ignorant is different than being malicious?

Yep it's different.

But being a bad parent doesn't mean there's a malicious intent. You can be a really good person but a really bad parent.

It was flooding in California. As the flood waters were rising, a man was on the stoop of his house and another man in a row boat came by. The man in the row boat told the man on the stoop to get in and he'd save him. The man on the stoop said, no, he had faith in God and would wait for God to save him. The flood waters kept rising and the man had to go to the second floor of his house. A man in a motor boat came by and told the man in the house to get in because he had come to rescue him.

The man in the house said no thank you. He had perfect faith in God and would wait for God to save him. The flood waters kept rising. Pretty soon they were up to the man's roof and he got out on the roof. A helicopter then came by, lowered a rope and the pilot shouted down in the man in the house to climb up the rope because the helicopter had come to rescue him. The man in the house wouldn't get in. He told the pilot that he had faith in God and would wait for God to rescue him. The flood waters kept rising and the man in the house drowned. When he got to heaven, he asked God why didn't he save him. He told God that he had perfect faith in God, but God had let him drown.

"What more do you want from me?" asked God. "I sent you two boats and a helicopter."

Theists can believe what they want, but belittling the skills of hard working people and saying "god did it" is just insulting.

I fail to see how a theist believing a medical doctor works through the hand of God is insulting said doctor. YMMV.

guys, keep the thread clean.

anyways, this is just bad parenting and has nothing to do with christian belief; in fact Jesus healed lots of people; also that church message is very distorced.

Because it renders the doctor's skills irrelevant. It implies that anyone could have been the instrument of healing instead of someone who devoted years of their life to learning all that man had discovered about medicine.

It's just as bad as when someone comes through something like a natural disaster and gives thanks to god for saving them. They forget that if god is real and actually deigned to save them; well, god's also the one that caused the disaster to happen in the first place!

Actually, the Christian belief is directly relevant to the thread, as the parents trusted their belief over medicine.

Those kids should have been taken away from the parents the first time; not left with them to let the murdering scumbags do it again.

sorry, i'm @ work so i posted very quickly.

i meant that their belief != christian belief. And i agree that those kids should be taken when their first kid died, what those services did to avoid this?

I was saying, from their point of view... I don't see why if they believe in an all-powerful God, why they think his power would stop at the door of a doctor's office. Don't twist my meaning, please.

Umm, mormons didn't invent the TV, that was invented in England by John Logie Baird, an atheist.

Guess it depends on wether you talk about the monitor or the TELEvision.

That's like saying well, god will provide for my family financially therefore i won't work and will spend the day praying. idiots.

There are actually people who live that way...

What were you dropped on your head?

She just said that the doctors can help, and this help is just another way God could be seen to be helping.. Be it by motivating them to be doctors and help others or whatever..

It doesn't detract from the dedication of the doctor, nor their skill. It's just another way for a different person (with different beliefs) to look at them and their skills.

If you're going to attack something, attack something that is actually offensive, don't cherry pick an unrelated statement and go after it..

Respect--;

Sorry, but that's not what you said, at all.

Yeah, yeah it was.

you honestly believe an omnipowerful being needs help?

By definition? No.

There's is, however, more than one way to skin a cat.

Also, this is a question better suited to someone who still believes. I'm just pointing out that Charisma didn't say what FloatingFatman tried to present her as saying.

So you are in effect denying them their freedom to practice their faith be it Christian,

What about the right of the child ? Maybe he wants to be cured so one day when he is old enough he might be able to choose his own belief which is part of his right as an american.

The problem with religious nuts his they are not happy to only believe they must force other people including their own childs to believe too.

It was God's will that they not be able to chose. :pinch:

My opinion is if the parents don't take the child to a doctor, and the child dies because of it, it is murder.Religious beliefs be damned. We are talking about a human being here.
