Yes, I know SSH, I'm using it right atm.

I run minecraft on a headless server, in my own house. The problem that I have with it is thus:

Whenever I close the terminal to it, or put my main computer (one I'm SSHing on) to standby or shut down, It closes out the Minecraft server as well.

I thought SSH was to configure the computer, not run programs on the fly. Or maybe I don't understand the way it works.

Should just put it on the VGA side of my monitor, if nothing else.

Oh, a friend told me about screen, I looked up the command, and presto.

If you're using this server to host Minecraft, I highly recommend Minecraft Server Manager. It will take care of everything for you, including starting your Minecraft servers for you at boot, managing updates, and doing regular backups. That said, MSM uses screen because screen is an awesome utility. I consider it essential on all my systems (especially the headless).
