+KibosJ Subscriber² Posted April 23, 2013 Subscriber² Share Posted April 23, 2013 I've recently stumbled upon Rippln, it's a new "technology" that is about to go viral. A closer look reveals that Rippln employs a sophisticated multilevel marketing scheme based on invites and access codes to tease fans into growing their following on the expectation that earlier ?players? will receive kickbacks and residuals for bringing in additional levels, or ripples, of players and teams, ostensibly to grow the site?s commerce ecosystem. However, there?s no guarantee that fans will become players, or that such an ecosystem will get built Source: http://www.sv411.com...orm-goes-viral/ It looks rather interesting, especially once you sign up and watch the NDA video. I have one invite available if anyone wants to take a look :)
n_K
Not gonna lie, sounds completely hyped up and dull and I highly doubt it'll be the next big viral thing, just their marketing team drumming it up to sound like that.
Growled Member Posted April 24, 2013 Member Share Posted April 24, 2013 It sounds like a scam to me. Sorry.

siah1214
A closer look reveals that Rippln employs a sophisticated multilevel marketing scheme based on invites and access codes AKA it's bull****, and no, I won't be participating.
+virtorio MVC Posted April 24, 2013 MVC Share Posted April 24, 2013 This thing seems to sum up everything I hate about the current state of the internet. astropheed 1 Share
+KibosJ Subscriber² Posted April 24, 2013 Author Subscriber² Share Posted April 24, 2013 I understand why people don't want to participate, I was hugely suspect when I first looked at it. I'm not sure it's a scam though, my view is that it can't hurt to have a look. They have taken my name and email address and no other information and have said that no more information will be needed until it's launched. When it is launched it will be under huge scrutiny I am sure. Just thought you guys might want to take a look :)
The Evil Overlord
Still appears to be what I would describe as an online pyramid scheme (but I'm cynical)
Quactaur
It is quite evidently a scam. KilbosJ, do you not think it's incredible that an NDA video of Rippln is not only available on youtube, but is openly hosted by them? This is their longer video. The whole thing is worth a look, it's classic scam tv, but From . Watch that. It's a better diagram of a pyramid scheme than you'll find on wikipedia. The idea of the app is you promote a product of some sort, and it 'ripples' to your circle. Who then choose to rerippl it. So on and so forth. The app logs signups and uses of whatever you've promoted and attributes all rippled takeup of the app to you. The only problem is you don't get a penny unless you're a "Ripple player" (4:12 into the video). This will presumably cost money. So in short, the one thing Rippln's owners can guarantee is a lot of idiots with dollar signs in their eyes are going to get a lot of their similarly greedy friends to do the same. From there rippln users will spam eachother relentlessly hoping to score big bucks, which I'm guessing will only materialise for the innermost of the innermost circle. What do you call a scheme like that? A pyramid scheme. What do you call one that's been fiddled with to be legal? An MLM scheme. Oh, and the guy who created rippln? A big hotshot in the 'make $$$ working at home / MLM' industry. It's a scam. It'll make the guy who created it and a few users a bit of money by turning spamming from an automated service to a user-generated one, but that's it. Edit: P.S you said "When it launches it'll be under scrutiny". I'll bet it'll never "launch" fully. It'll keep a secret gloss over it because if it ever hard launches it'll be clear there's nothing more to it. SO long as it's in 'invite mode' every smuck who signs up for it thinks they're part of the 'inner circle' and thus stand to make money.

Dick Montage
No thanks. The fact that someone joined Neowin to offer invites, twice - suggests it's a pyramid!

LittleNeutrino Veteran Posted April 24, 2013 Veteran Share Posted April 24, 2013 Depending on where you live it is also illegal, as Multi Level Marketing is illegal in a lot of places now (especially most states in the USA)
Tigurinn
No thanks. The fact that someone joined Neowin to offer invites, twice - suggests it's a pyramid! Ooohhh, come on now. He's probably a beginner in marketing (as well as very probably being the thread starter), but he clearly knows that he's supposed to try to hype up the "product" eeerrr.... "services" ....err,what ever, by making it seem that this "thing" is in demand
+KibosJ Subscriber² Posted April 24, 2013 Author Subscriber² Share Posted April 24, 2013 After watching the videos I genuinely thought this was alright, apparently not :( This is just going to turn into a thread where people argue whether or not it is legal. Can this be closed please :)
