exit Posted April 24, 2013 Share Posted April 24, 2013 Mozilla, better know for its Firefox Web browser, is trying to get into the smartphone business, and if its first step into the market is any indication, it may have a winner. On Tuesday, the nonprofit organization rolled out to developers two smartphones running its Firefox OS mobile operating system. It sold out in just a few hours. Firefox OS is a new platform that is set to debut this year in Latin America and Europe. I personally think it sucks, it's cheap and why would you buy something that's inferior in every way to what we already have? No clue, but I guess some people will just waste money. This is the last hail-mary for Mozilla to stay relevant and they are about 5+ years too late. This might be as popular as Ubuntu phone which will sell 100 phones a year. Microsoft was late but they still have a remote chance in grabbing some small but relatively significant market share in the smartphone market with Nokia.. Firefox OS and their HTML5 stuff is so silly it's not even funny. It looks unpolished, bubbly and kid like and it's really not even close in competing with iOS, Android and Windows Phone.. But I guess good luck. Considering that most of their money comes from Google, it wouldn't surprise me if Google stopped supporting/paying for Firefox to use Google as default search engine. It can't be another platform with it's own unique set of apps, and app store - there's no way it would generate market share or popularity amongst developers (if so, very little). If anything, this proves how bold they are in taking risks in the complex and dangerous mobile market arena, gotta give em some credit NO? Well here's the thing.. I totally get what they are trying and if they have done this 5-6 years ago before the smartphone market shaped up and if they have launched it just after iOS was introduced they would have made a change and by today the Firefox OS would have been polished and went through several revisions. Running HTML5 apps without the actual app store would have been a pretty big thing at the beginning of smartphone explosion.. but now, it's completely pointless.. especially after we've seen that most HTML5 apps built for mobile suck and companies who have tried it went back to native development. Mozilla isn't going for the high end market that permeates the western world. They are going after the very big and pined for growth emerging markets where high end devices are not affordable. So, to say it doesn't offer what a device like the iPhone doesn't isn't a relevant comparison. The same is true for Ubuntu phone. What Mozilla is doing is actually of extreme importance and I'm glad they're doing it. If it matures well and makes a decent stay into the market we will all benefit (and that includes iOS or Android adopting its innovations hoping to kill it). Mozilla is attempting to free both developers and users from the traditional walls of any given platform by allowing developers the ability to truly make the web work natively on devices. The win for consumers is we may get a future where we're able to freely chose the device and OS that meets our needs without being tied up in a market that promotes ecosystems at the expense of competitive innovation. But I'll let you carry on fighting the war for your favorite brand, whomever that is. But I guess good luck. This is business not a high school musical. Google doesn't give Mozilla money because they like them and they won't withhold it because they don't. They give Mozilla money because Mozilla has a large user base and they want to be sure those users use Google's search product.
