I can ping google but cannot browse websites or login to skype

I don't usually ask for help on forums but I'm at a loss...

I'm having an intermittent networking problem in my house. My network setup goes like this:

- Laptops/desktops all connected wirelessly to linksys

- Linksys with tomato connected by wire to bebox

- Bebox connected to internet with stock firmware and settings

These computers work fine:

My desktop (win7/ubuntu) is using another linksys router in client mode with dd-wrt to access the wireless network provided by the linksys downstairs. The linksys connected to the desktop does not broadcast an ssid at all because of client mode.

My laptop (fedora) - an old t61 with internal wireless card

But i'm having an intermittent issue with two other laptops - a macbook and a dell (or hp maybe?)

Basically both of these laptops randomly decide that they can no longer resolve domain names in internet browsers or applications. I can still ping google and internal ip addresses but browsers just hang for a while before saying cannot connect.

While these laptops have this issue if i plug in another wireless adaptor via usb and connect to the network through it after having disconnected from the network with the onboard adapter the laptop can access the internet fine.

The only other solution that fixes this for all computers is to restart the routers which are being connected to wirelessly.

Has anyone had an issue like this before?

I'm stuck and don't know how to go about finding out what the issue is as I can't seem to be able to replicate it manually.

Hmm, I was sure I was on opendns but maybe it was removed after the last time i reset my router.

I've added it - even if it doesn't fix the issue at least I will be back on openDNS.

I have had problems like this happen before with DD-WRT routers... generally, I find the best fix is to do a hard reset on the router and then reconfigure it again from scratch. Once you have it set up again, do a NVRAM backup to save the fresh configuration so you can just flash the backup next time.

Also, are you using any of the QOS services on tomato? (L7-filter, P2P blocking, etc) If so, you could just try disabling those and see if that corrects the problem..

Well that tells me there is nothing wrong with your internet connection or your routers, etc. Just client connection to wireless - you sure your not switching over to say the wireless across the street.

Have you tried just disconnecting and reconnecting vs changing out the adapter? So sounds like your double natting as well.. With the bebox in front of your wireless router - or are you using the wireless router as just an AP, which is how it should be configured vs natting again.
