What do you think of this? 21:9 1080p Monitor from LG

So I play a lot of games and lately I've been throwing up EVE Online on two screens. Unfortunately the bezel between them is driving me batty. Now, while I enjoy having two seperate screens I figured I might be able to trade down to the LG 29:1 screen, giving a bit more realestate from a single monitor without having to deal with bezels in the middle of my game.

The response times are the same for both monitors, but the LG is an IPS (a big bonus for me, personally). And, while the price tag is a bit high ($640) I find myself seriously considering it.

Does anyone have any experience with this monitor? Opinions? It seems two of my gaming friends highly disapprove of it (not much reason given other than it not being 1ms). Any feedback or suggestions would be helpful, even good alternatives, such as good monitors with extremely small bezels (or virtually none at all).

Not an expert on displays recently. But for a nice IPS 5ms is plenty fast for normal eyes, and it is the same as the older panel you had. So you can safely say you will like it.

Ask your friends what IPS do they suggest you buy at this size??? if they cannot offer something better, go for it, you will love it.

5ms is enough, I have an LG IPS myself and don't really notice the difference and that was coming from a 22" 2ms TN Samsung.

I have no regrets about purchasing :-)

I play mainly BF3, GW2, a bit of Diablo 3 (you have to run this in fullscreen windowed mode for 2560x1080) and Bioshock Infinite. They all work fine. I have also overclocked the monitor to 75hz using EVGA Precision and it's fine. 80 and above though introduces frame skipping :-)

As for your gaming friends - there is no such thing as 1 ms (or 2 ms and rarely there is 5 ms) response time. Take any read how GTG is a number taken out of one's crotch, how quality is sacrificed for speed and how input lag is much more important parameter for gaming.

Alright, ordered the Dell on off their website with the coupon. Will be here day after tomorrow so I'll have a chance to test it out then. Thanks for the recommendations and the Dell saves me a lot of money.

Hello,

I have an EQD EQ276W monitor, which has a 2560×1440 (16:9) IPS LCD screen. I had to exchange the one I first bought due to stuck pixels, but the second one has been flawless.

 

At that resolution, you have to use DisplayPort, a Dual Link DVI or HDMI rev. 1.4 interface to get that resolution, as VGA, Single Link DVI and HDMI rev. 1.3 can't reach it. A possible consideration; if you have not updated your video card in a while, you may need to replace that as well. I suspect it would be the same with the lower-resolution 2560?1080 used in the LG 29EA93-P monitor.

Response time isn't a factor anymore, 5ms is fine. IPS for me makes no difference. You'll be very happy with it, but for that price you're in WQHD territory.

Alright so here's my little review of the monitor:

+ Wide angle makes some games awesome (EVE Online, Mechwarrior Online, Civ V. Can post screens if you like)

+ Movies on it is pretty cool (especially combined with 5.1 from my headset)

+ For whatever reason, I feel like I get more real estate out of this screen than both my 16:9's.

+ Included USB ports have solved some USB power consumption issues I was having, and now turning off the monitor can turn off both my headset box and keyboard power.

+ The stand is awesome, offering full rotation left and right as well as significant upward travel.

- Due to how wide it is, it can be irritating to look at the edges of the screen. So far I've found it best when UI elements are near the center with the edges for peripherals. So, in the end it's actually better for gaming/media than it is for work.

- It color corrects relative to the colors on screen and its quite noticeable at times and bugs me. Also it defaults to power saver mode so when the screen gets more black it shuts down brightness (which I turned off)

- The resolution doesn't work for a few games (Skyrim, for example) but that's not really the screens fault (although skyrim would have been a wonderful test).

- You have to use the provided DVI cable for whatever reason (perhaps a difference in pins)

Not really a plus or minus, but I tested out putting this screen between my two old screens on my desk for a three monitor setup and I suddenly feel like I'm in some space cockpit playing EVE. Its a bit ridiculous but if my games are in borderless windowed it makes it easier to navigate between things like skype, music and browser. I'll post a pic for the heck of it when I get home just to show you how it barely fits on my desk XD.

DVI always confuses me, I find this graphic really handy for identifying what port/cable I have. Hope it helps :)

Also nice little review, I've been looking at getting an IPS screen and it's good to get an honest opinion on one of the offerings, like you I originally looked at the LG screen but the Dell one looks pretty sweet so think I'll be grabbing one as well :)
