Doctor Who and Sherlock writer Steve Thompson is to team with Guillermo del Toro for a new HBO series.

Monster is adapted from the Manga series by author Naoki Urasawa.

Thompson - whose latest Doctor Who episode airs this Saturday on BBC One - has written a pilot, which del Toro plans to direct, according to Deadline.

Monster tells the story of a young doctor who saves the life of a 12-year-old boy. However, the boy's evil nature soon threatens to place the entire world in peril.

Del Toro - whose next big-screen effort Pacific Rim is due for release later this year - will also executive produce the project alongside Thompson.

The Monster adaptation was previously in development as a movie at New Line.
