Rumor: Next Xbox will be $499, or $299 with a sub

Recommended Posts

The latest Next Xbox rumblings have been put forth by tech blogger Paul Thurrott, who claims the new console will be based on the "Core" version of Windows 8, priced at $499 or $299 with a two-year Xbox Live Gold subscription at $10 per month, and must be connected to the internet to use.

"This is source of the 'always on'/'always online' rumors and isn't as Draconian as many seem to believe," he wrote. If accurate, I can't wait to hear Microsoft's precisely-worded pitch. Thurrott also has reason to believe the Xbox will launch in November and that Microsoft will at some point put out another, cheaper model of the Xbox 360 (codenamed "Stingray"), which seems like a safe bet.

Whatever the case may be, we'll hear more about the console on the morning of May 21, 2013 as well as additional information at E3. Thank eff for that.

So if you would be getting gold anyways, you save some money...count me in.

Can't you get yearly subs much cheaper than $10 a month?! That's $120 a year.

So $499 with no subscription, but $539 with 2 year subscription. '

$5 per month for XBOX, so $120 for two years.

$539 - $120 = $419 <--- Good deal assuming you will be getting 2 years of XBOX Live anyway.

Otherwise, it's $499 + $120 for two years.

There has to be some sort of stipulations with the monthly price model. Otherwise, there is literally no reason to buy the regular priced one.

SOme people don't want to use Gold services..

It's subsidising the cost of the console though.

I guess! Think I'm just used to the cut throat UK market, aka never pay RRP.

Yep, so you'd pay $240 over 2 years. Take off $200 that you save on the console and you've paid $40 for two years of xbl gold. As long as there aren't any nasty stipulations, it sounds like it'd be a good deal for those who subscribe already.

Just like with phones, the stores will probably decide the final retail price of the subsidized version as well, the RRP is pretty much just the upper limit.

I wonder how they'll do this in Norway and countries with similar rules like us, since we don't allow more than 12 month contracts for consumers, and max 24 for business. i they'll just ditch the subscription model or do a 12 month version and if so what it'll cost.

PT has corrected himself saying the sub will be 2 years at $15, not $10.

Ouch. $15/month for 2 years is $360 (or $180/year). It's only worth it if you want to subscribe for more than 10.66666666666667 months (or 324.66 days).

$299 + 2 years at $15/month = $659

$499 + 2 years at $15/month = $859

$499 + 1 year at $15/month = $679

$499 + 10 months at $15/month = $649

$499 + 10.66666666666667 months at $15/month = $659.0000000000001

I'd buy the $499 because I don't want to spend $360 for 2 years. The most I've ever used with my old Xbox 360 (as well as the replacement given to me as a gift) was 6 months. And even then, I barely made use of half of it. My friends bought 1-year subscriptions and only one of them made good use of it.

Your math is flawed because a normal sub if you buy the $500 console isn't $15. It's $8 if you're actually paying monthly, but you can get yearly subs for $40. So if you're going for most bang for your buck, you save a lot no matter what by just buying the $500, but if you can't afford that in one payment you'll only end up paying about $80 more spread out over two years than someone who bought the $500 box and paid $40/year so I guess its still not too bad.

So you're saying as long as you already subscribe to gold, it's worth it...

I assumed $15/month would be the new price. I didn't account for any deals on yearly memberships. Going by the $8/month price, then it would definitely be cheaper to pay more upfront.

Yes, but only if you want to subscribe for more than 324.66 days. Otherwise it's cheaper to go for the $499 console but only by mere dollars when it's 12 months or less. If you subscribe for more than 12 months, you'll be losing more than $20 (difference of cost between $299 + 2 years and $499 + 1.083333333333333 years [or more]).

I think most people will go for the subscription because it's hard to imagine how much you can save by paying more upfront. You and I may not have that problem because we'd likely do the math and figure out which option is best. As for the average though, they'd only consider the initial price.

no way in hell $500 for a xbox then $60 for a game when every single game is going to have a season pass so the game is stipped of content and sold to you twice look at bioshock inf for example.

this Gen is going to SUCK the MONEY from your pockets

the avg game is going to cost players over $100USD each with the all season pass / DLC crap

time for me to jump ship and just stay with nintendo they know what games are for

the wast majority of subscribers subscribe 365 days a year.... so I'm not seeing the issue. if you don't, then buy the regular version.

Personally though, I'd probably end up buying the full priced version simply because I don't want any more monthly expenses, unless economy is tight :)

But chances are the subscription won't be available here anyway, we have max 12 month contract subscriptions for consumers over here. so either it would be more expensive or they'll just drop it. that's if the 24 month thing is true.
