Being Random becoming the latest Trend ?

Recommended Posts

Well, let me write a short introduction first.

I don't post very often about general things in this forum, but there is a thing bugging me for quite some time now. Whenever my friends and I meet/party/talk on teamspeak/whatever, there are always some people who think it is funny to interrupt a good conversation by calling random sentences or totally irrelevant sentences.

Here is just a short example :

A: What do you guys plan on doing this weekend ?

B: Well, we planned to go out partying in Colon.

C: I like Bacon.

A & B: ...

But in most cases, my other friends complement these random outbursts by laughters or even saying : "This was so random". Maybe this sounds like I'm on a rant here, but since when did conversation skills like high knowledge or knowing when your mouth should be shut become substituted by "being random" ?

I, personally, often think about what I'm going to say, often I also overthink and when I start responding to something sometimes it isn't this subject anymore. When I was young I learned that it is common sense to listen and think before mindlessly talking, but education differs a lot from person to person. Could this be the reason for me disliking this behaviour, am I just conditioned to it ?

I know that "being random" is an overused phrase, you could also say "unpredictable" or even "interesting". A lot of teenagers I heard to use it, but I'm nearly 19 years old now, and among the youngest of my colleagues. Many people, in my opinion, try to call themselves "random" or try to act like they are, but in fact are not.

Could this also be another factor, that people try to hide how boring they are in reality, that they are nothing special and they simply want to look interesting ?

I noticed that while some people are unfocused about what they say while having a conversation, others try to force their "randomness" onto other people. Maybe this is just a side-effect of the entire Yolo/Swag-wave trolling around lately or of increasing ADHD spread around people ?

You could call me boring, but I prefer planning and thoughtful talking over impulsive "randomness".

What do you think of this ? Anyone here had similar experiences ?

RemixedCat springs to mind. It usually means "I have nothing to add but I do like the sound of my own voice, so I must say something. If I act random it will be hilarious".

All jokes aside, I agree. It's annoying, it adds nothing of value and, worst of all, it gets celebrated just because she's a woman.

I have seen this trend more on the internet.

But in our day to day life, such person finds himself/herself shut out of our group because soon everybody gets annoyed by them. You cannot use this randomness after a certain age. People will quickly slot you into idiot category.

I'd get annoyed and let em know it's not funny or cool, might even threaten someone if they insist on being "random"

I just noticed that it is written Cologne in English :D And that a colon is, well, a certain body part :D

The problem is, that "random" people get approval in our group, and we are all older than 18. Maybe some of us still didn't reach a certain level of maturity.

All of these - ADHD, trend of trolling and trying to hide how boring they are (so many people are), up to a certain point, are normal things. But everything in moderation. Some downright stupid trolling is fun, but it fills the cup very fast (and depending on how much that cup has been filled by some other recent events, and how big is that cup in the first place).

I was in - even more, I belonged to - a group like this in college - we'd often be talking the biggest nonsense money can't buy. Considered immature at best, but it was a great deal of fun... for us. Serious people (pretty much anyone else) looked down on us. These days I look down and scoff upon such people as well, but back in those days, even knowing what I know now, I would not have had it any other way. Imagine that.

Now, I dislike using term "mature", "growing up" and such, so I won't say you have outgrown that group - everybody's opinion is valid for themselves at the time. But you seem to not belong to it anymore. You can't fix this, especially if the majority doesn't want that. You might want to start looking for a new group you can associate with, new friends as it were. Or if it's your relatives and acquaintances, you'll just have to endure. With any luck, it will pass given time.

I don't think it's a new trend, it's more that it's becoming more and more accepted by everyone else.

Like 10 years ago anyone that liked Lord of the Rings was a complete and utter nerd.. now everyone seems to like it. :p

Pure attention seeking, some people have to always feel like they have to have all attention on them so they will do anything to get it.

It's a mental sickness if you ask me.

One day these kids will look back and realize what fools they were - like I did. Unfortunately, you can't go back in time.

All I can say is treat every girl in your class with respect, and be a man. They'll remember it.

Well, my time in school is now over, and maybe I will find some like-minded people in college later this year :D I'm also not trying to say that I'm more mature, I can be pretty annoying sometimes, too. But, as you said, there is a line, which, in my opinion, shouldn't be crossed or it gets just tiring for your associates.

Trend? I have been doing this for like 15 years.

I don't think it's a new trend, it's more that it's becoming more and more accepted by everyone else.

Maybe Trend was a bad word to put in the title, "getting generally accepted" describes it better, I guess, but I just wanted to keep it short and concise.

I'm no psychologist, but I guess, that there happened something in the lives of these people, like neglect from their parents or colleagues, which causes effects like "being random".

While looking up this topic I found a Wikipedia article about personality disorders,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Histrionic_personality_disorder

Many of the given characteristics seem to apply to a bunch of people I know :D
