Woman jailed in UK for forcing daughter, 14, to get pregnant

Recommended Posts

An American woman is in a United Kingdom prison after repeatedly forcing her 14-year-old daughter to inseminate herself with donor sperm, because the mother wanted another baby and could not conceive or adopt more children.

After a miscarriage at 14, the girl had a baby at 17, after regularly inseminating herself with sperm her mother purchased on the Internet, according to a report in The Guardian. The girl -- a virgin-- was apparently too scared to refuse her adoptive ?domineering? mother?s request.

The mother has not been identified to protect the daughter and grandchild.

Over a two-year period, the daughter had to inseminate herself seven times, while alone in her room at home, using syringes of semen. In hopes of getting a girl, the mother forced her daughter to follow a special diet and use painful acidic douches containing vinegar or lemon and lime juice, in the belief it could affect the baby?s gender.

When she became pregnant at 16, the daughter told health workers a concocted story about spending the night with a boy who abandoned her and was now abroad. The girl also told health professionals she wanted her mother to raise the child.

The mother had already adopted three children as infants from other countries, two when she was married, and one as a single, divorced parent. A health condition prevented her from giving birth on her own so she had undergone elective sterilization.

When she had trouble adopting a fourth child, she became distraught and turned to her adopted daughter to provide her with another baby, according to court documents.

The crime was discovered in July 2011 when the girl gave birth.

I would say the mom was sick but sick doesn't even come close to it.

I would actually say she was really quite ill and obviously needs help. Sick would have been forcing the girl to sleep with guys to get her pregnant.

Ill / Sick being interchangeable terms. I'd argue either case is disgusting and wrong.

That seems like a strange line to draw. I would say that forcing your teenage daughter to undergo multiple pregnancies and miscarriages is pretty sick regardless of whether intercourse was involved or not. I agree that she needs help but a 5 year gaol sentence seems short for such a serious form of abuse.

To me, it sounds like the woman clearly had some kind of mental illness that made her desperately need babies, no matter the cost. I'm not excusing what she did; but I think treatment in a secure institution is a more appropriate sentence here. Somewhere where she can get the help she clearly needs instead of being locked up like any other abuser.

Not being able to have your own children can do funny things to some women; one of my sisters had some complex mental health issues when she found she could never conceive, so I can perhaps see a little better why this woman might have been driven to do this.

Yes, she needed help. Clearly has mental issues. BUT she planned this, watched her daughter go through a misscariage, and then did it all again. She can get the help she needs when in prison.

Nuts, OR an artifact of the welfare state.

Here in the US we often see women who have child after child to stay on welfare & get various benefits and tax advantages like the child and expanded earned income tax credits (reverse taxes - an income support.)

If her daughter was nearing adulthood, and therefore reducing moms eligibility, the gravy train was nearing the last station. In the absense of yet another adoption a new grandbaby as a dependant provides another benefit cycle.

One of welfares donations to the law of unintended consequences.

There are plenty of people in prison with mental health problems and sad stories. She didn't just abuse her daughter - she took advantage of her insecurity as an adoptee and systematically abused her physically and emotionally.

I agree that pregnancy-related issues can be hard for women to bear but consider the daughter who will now associate being pregnant with abuse. What if she wants to have children of her own in the future but can't because of what happened to her as a teenager?

I'm not arguing that she should be released, not at all. I just think she should serve her sentence in a place where she can get treatment instead of just left to rot and never get better. Once she's better, THEN move her to a regular prison to serve out her time.

That problem with the welfare system is very well documented and recognized by pragmatists of the left and right. Economics 101: if you incentivise something you usually get more of it.

Maybe it's your perceptions that need a reality check

this is just too sad and quite dramatic, for all the interventionists: the mother, daughter and the baby. :/

That's fair enough although shouldn't that be applies to all prisoners with mental health issues? I understand that you feel differently about this because of your sister's experiences but I don't see how this woman deserves special treatment over other prisoners.

It's funny how you're happy to take advantage of welfare like Medicare and have the state pay for your medical costs but you then demonise anyone else on benefits and look for additional ways to run the welfare system down. You don't have any evidence that the woman was exploiting welfare so your straw man arguments are nothing more than trolling.

I would advocate that treatment is always the better option.

If you lock a sick person in a jail for 5 years, what do you have when they get out? A sick person that's learned all sorts of new ways to hurt people. Lock them up in a hospital though, you have at least a chance of releasing a well person at the end of it.

There you go again, making assumptions. I opted out of those parts of Medicare that I legally could and have full-shot private insurance that meets my needs.

And for the record: Social Security isn't the same as welfare. The vast majority of the former is paid for by employee and employer contributions while these perpetual welfare recipients seldom contribute to their benefits.

You don't have any evidence that the woman was exploiting welfare so your straw man arguments are nothing more than trolling.

Learn to read; I used "OR", indicating it as a possible alternative to her being nuts.

If I was the daughter, I would have sought out the police, when mom made such a kooky suggestion.

She must have been frightened of her.

Buying sperm from the net? thank god it was screened and was human sperm.........

So by that logic, I wonder if I can buy Swedish sex slaves.....

You can buy anything. Sex slave trade is still a billion dollar business.
