Beta of Lightworks Video editor for Linux is out now!

Recommended Posts

Today we are releasing the first Linux Public Beta version of Lightworks, this means any user wishing to test the Linux Beta version can do so by visiting the link below, filling out the short form and agreeing to the Terms and Conditions:

www.lwks.com/betas-linux

This Beta version contains the new EditShare Licensing Service (ELS) which will allow users to sign in to the application using their Lightworks Username and Password (an internet connection MUST be present on the system) When signing in each new user will be automatically given a complimentary seven day Pro license to test the Pro version of Lightworks, this is renewable at the end of the seven days by simply signing back in to the application.

The Linux Beta does not include trial AVID DNxHD licensing due to the restrictions imposed by AVID. We will shortly be adding the option to the Lightworks Shop www.lwks.com/shop for users to purchase an AVID DNxHD license specifically for the Linux version.

There are still some limitations with the current Linux build which can be found on the Linux Beta page above.

Many thanks to all those Linux Alpha Testers that continually submitted feedback and helped get the Linux version to Beta stage.

How does this compare to OpenShot?

While OpenShot is a very good video editor, it is not professional quality like Lightworks. (That is my understanding; I don't really use video editing software for anything other than super basic stuff.) The Linux Action Show did a review of an alpha version of Lightworks for Linux a little while ago and came away very impressed. Considering that they are actively tracking OpenShot and Lightworks, I'd assume that Chris and Matt will do a full review of Lightworks (and possibly comparison to OpenShot) sometime in the near future.

It seems like they've been talking this forever. Glad to see it finally out in beta.

Even though its taken them ages to get it out in beta, I'm impressed with how they have made it look and feel. I hope this is down to how long they kept it in development before this release.
