XP had a SP3 despite the "failure" of Vista. Both incorrect. 1. MS doesn't "have" to do anything of the sort. 2. They've done away with service packs. Windows 7 is not getting an SP2. Remember the SP's on XP, some of them were full upgrades of the OS. What if MS charged for those at that point? Justified? Or not? We all know that MS is moving it's pace for the Windows releases, so expect more updates, and expect some payment for these updates. As someone earlier said in this thread, MS is not a charity. And why would Apple be able to do so, but MS wouldn't. And don't start with the 'the updates are cheaper", as the Apple hardware already payed for most of it..... Free updates? we bought into an OS and then backlash because it didn't deliver what people expected, ( start button, boot to desktop.. etc..). The issue is, MS needs to build trust in their brand. not the other way around. I'd venture to say that, anyone who says it shouldn't be free to bring a windows that hopefully most will be happy with, needs to realize that there is a legal term called something like warranty, getting what you expect from what you pay for. If it doesn't perform as a user would expect, that's the issue. recently, maybe yesterday or a day before that, the lady who was interviewed about the windows update or windows blue. MS seems to have taken alot of flack over things as the start button and whatever else. but not everyone was satisfied with what Windows 8 brought to the table. the lady at the interview did in factsay it was supposed to be an OS for tablets, laptops and desktops, trying to be the OS for everyone. Those are just all the individual files from WU but put into one big file/patch that you can use to slipstream for future installs. Service Packs different in that they also have bug fixes not found through WU because they're minor. I can't remember the last time MS did one, maybe it was for XP? Windows 7 users will have to, unless Micorosft releases an update rollup like they did for Windows 2000 near the end of its life cycle.
