Sid Meier to release first iOS game with Sid Meier's Ace Patrol
by John Callaham
If you are a PC gamer, chances are you have played a game that was designed or at least supervised by Sid Meier. He is best known for launching the Civilization series but has developed a ton of other games in his long history. He co-founded Firaxis Games which has continued to develop Civilization titles but without Meier's direct design involvement.
Today, 2K Games announced that Meier has created his first game for iOS devices. The Wall Street Journal reports that the game, the strategy title Sid Meier's Ace Patrol, will be released for free on May 9th, although it will support in-game purchases for new missions and items. Set in WWI, the game has players commanding air squadrons over the skies of Europe.
Meier designed and even programmed his new game and says that making games for mobile devices can take half the time compared to a PC game. He adds, "It's a shorter development cycle but the amount of cool things we can do is very similar to what we can do on a PC."
It will be interesting to see just how many more well known game developers decide to create new games specifically for mobile platforms. There's no word if Sid Meier's Ace Patrol will be released for other platforms such as Android or Windows Phone.
