[GPO] How to allow Non admins to install Updates to software?

Recommended Posts

I cannot be the only one with this problem.

How using GPO can I allow Non admin users to install updates to software that is already installed.

Examples,

Adobe Flash, Java, ect.

We have been footing a lot of calls lately about people that are unable to install updates to software due to the admin box coming up.

System center configuration manager. Does exactly what your looking for. Its a pain to setup but allows users to install their own software. you can even set it up so they go to an internal website and install the software you set.

Have you ever thought of using "sudowin"? it elevates their privileges to be able to run a select number of programs/executables as administrator without actually giving them administrator rights.

Not really an option as we cannot deploy the software to all the computers easily and we do not want them having access to install every program only certain ones.

Due to our infrastructure we cannot deploy SCCM (more than 60% of our users are remote and connect through VPN so SCCM has never functioned properly)

Really? We deal with a fair few external users here and so far we've encountered very few issues. I would definitely recommend SCCM for this kind of job.

Hopefully after our network overhaul this summer/fall we will be able to handle it however, currently the network infrastructure here at corporate is about 15 years old.
