madd-hatter
I'm not sure why it's an option to use these. They are redundant, everyone tags a phrase that's in the topic title. It just makes things ugly and decreases readability. They really aren't needed... I'd like to vote to remove them... Just my 2? Hum
^ Agreed. This is way over-used. It is much like 'screaming' with CAPS LOCKED.
compl3x
This seems like a completely ridiculous use of the prefix tag:
DirtyLarry Veteran Posted May 3, 2013 Veteran Share Posted May 3, 2013 Mainly seems to be used for the news articles, and I would imagine it is so said articles are easier to find from search engines and searching on the site itself. With that said, some do seem to be rather long, and they do take up a lot of real estate as well.
compl3x
I think those prefix tags are alright for things like "rumour" or if something like "E3" is being covered, but just general use seems kinda pointless.

Or the game name, For instance that pictured thread, the prefix could've been just "Skyrim" and left at that.
+Majesticmerc MVC Posted May 3, 2013 MVC Share Posted May 3, 2013 They work quite well on the Linux subforum. Some people use them to identify the Linux distro that a topic refers to. They do seem a bit abused on the gamers hangout though.
Nick H. Supervisor Posted May 3, 2013 Supervisor Share Posted May 3, 2013 The issue isn't to do with the tags, it's to do with the way users use the tagging system. metal_dragen 1 Share
Chasethebase Reporter Posted May 3, 2013 Reporter Share Posted May 3, 2013 The issue isn't to do with the tags, it's to do with the way users use the tagging system. Then that problem is down to the staff at present, seeing how all posts on the first page of this sub-forum are by news staff. These tag prefixes should only be to identify platforms in my opinion, and nothing else. Other tags can be used for other searchable terms, but having a long term in the prefix is unwieldy and irritating for everyone. I'm guessing this is just due to the transitional pains of moving NeoGamr's content into this sub-forum, and it'll all sort itself out in due course. +Majesticmerc, soniqstylz and Nick H. 3 Share
+Matthew S. Subscriber² Posted May 5, 2013 Subscriber² Share Posted May 5, 2013 Why not just limit this sub-forums perfix tags to a subset of stuff that would make sense.
Shadrack
I agree. Some forums have implemented systems where only pre-defined tags can be used as a prefix tag. I wouldn't mind if that was limited because clearly it is being abused (perhaps unintentionally abused...).

What does that achieve?

Anthony Tosie Veteran Posted May 13, 2013 Veteran Share Posted May 13, 2013 Question to you guys: What do you want used for the prefix tag? Just the platform it's on -- e.g., MULTI, 360, PS3, etc?
Steven P. Administrators Posted May 13, 2013 Administrators Share Posted May 13, 2013 In an ideal world all threads are prefixed with tags, the whole idea of a tag system is to make searching for that subject really easy. If it's a design issue we can take care of that, but to me it seems like removing it defeats the purpose of indexed topics.

If it's a design issue we can take care of that, but to me it seems like removing it defeats the purpose of indexed topics. There is a big difference between tagging something for the search feature and selecting the "Use first tag as prefix" option. Searching is good, thus tags are good. That I can find, a "prefix" has no value. All the info needed is (should be) written up in the thread title. Prefixes are ugly, overused, and even worse, redundant. Redundancy is a key design flaw. Readability is sacrificed for what? This is pretty simple. Remove the "Use first tag as prefix" option. We don't need it, it doesn't do anything. Don't try to get too fancy. Simplicity is king. soniqstylz
Question to you guys: What do you want used for the prefix tag? Just the platform it's on -- e.g., MULTI, 360, PS3, etc? The main subject. And make them short. For instance, the thread tagged "Kaspersky Lab" really isn't about KL, it's about Watch Dogs. And instead of tagging it "Gran Turismo 6", why not just "GT6". Just be smart about your tags. If it's about the game, use the game's name as the tag, not the studio. We have individual forums for the platforms, so that would be redundant. For instance, shouldn't the GT6 thread be in the Sony forum?
Steven P. Administrators Posted May 16, 2013 Administrators Share Posted May 16, 2013 Some topics are prefixed with the nsfw tag and all topics in the jokes and funny stuff forum require prefix tags too, so how's that work then when that's removed from the title? Timan is away till the 29th, I can ask him to restyle it, and possibly move it after the title, but I don't want the prefix (or suffix if it becomes that) removed completely. Perhaps it could be adjusted to apply in some forums but not others? I liked John Callaham having his own published article forum as well. Removing it has caused flooding to the member created multiplatform forum.

The Evil Overlord
Personally I like the tagging system, but I do understand it isn't being used in the correct manner. It might be an idea for users to keep the tagging simpler so that the grouping for the tags would be easier at first glance for users looking for certain subjects.
