Circaflex Posted May 4, 2013 Share Posted May 4, 2013 Long story short I need to block certain websites, mainly social networks and streaming video websites (netflix, hulu, etc) on a computer. Its running Windows 7 I DO NOT have access to the router so I cannot block them that way I thought about just going the HOSTS method, but as I understand google chrome ignores those? Is there possibly an open source program, or free, that can restrict certain websites without being too intruding on the computer? Im trying to go about this in a stealth manner. Daedroth Posted May 4, 2013 Share Posted May 4, 2013 Try OpenDNS' Parental Controls. They have a free solution which can block access to parts of the Internet. Seriously though, the easiest way. If you use avast Anti Virus, it has a web site blocker. Also, check the settings of you firewall. I work with one other employee, we have an office in the hospital. This other employee spends a good deal of time on non-work related websites, and I'd lke to block those. I understand educating him as to why he shouldnt be on there is the best idea, but I have moved passed that. Because our office is located in the hospital, I dont have access to the routers, otherwise I would just blacklist them that way or use OpenDNS, but those two dont really work out here. I questioned your question is all, not in a bad way, not in a rude way :) In all honesty, Javik is right, you're been more counterproductive than your coworker! As long as the guy gets his job done, I really don't see the fuss and unless you're his boss... I'm not belittling anybody I just find it strange that you seem to think you have the right to act as this guy's judge, jury, and executioner when you're his boss. I volunteer at a computing charity as the deputy manager and I often sit at my computer playing games to keep me busy when there's a lull and I have no work to do. Ok, so I don't get paid for my work but if someone other than my boss tried doing this to me I'd be mad as hell and probably not work for them again. That's no intention of belittling, just an objective position of fact. It's not your business or your place to tell the guy what to do. Most businesses have a command structure for a reason and employees taking the law into their own hands never has a tendency to work all that well. I have several suggestions for them to get around the issue if they don't have something, which I am very sure they do (I also did work for a hospital and know what they have in place).
