lruggier Posted May 5, 2013 Share Posted May 5, 2013 So I know this probably has nothing to do with long texts from my S3 not completely getting to iPhones but i did drop my phone on Thursday, but i have the otterbox commuter case on it and everything has been working fine besides what im about to explain Since Friday 3 different friends with iPhones have had trouble getting my WHOLE long text message, they will get the 1/2 or 3/4 of the message but they wont get the last part and it will just end in the middle of my text. One of the people i sent a long text to before with an iphone was able to get my long texts a few weeks ago and it just showed up as a 3 page message on their iphone. However, yesterday they did not get it, so i tried to copy and paste the text and send it again, but the same thing happened and it ended in the middle of the text. why did this happen? is it something wrong with my phone? i feel like it cant be my phone because i then sent a long message to an iPhone and then a non-smart phone and the non-smart phone got the whole message but the iphone didnt....and for one of the people who didnt get my long message who has an iphone, a few weeks ago was able to get a really long message from me that showed up as a 3 page message on their iphone. why is this happening??? If I write a really long txt msg on my iPhone it won't even go out unless I go back to whatever is sendable (haven't actually taken the time to count). Usually the phones segments the message if it is too long, but then again is carrier enforced, which is why probably only half the message shows up. Long SMSes are broken into groups of 160 characters and sent as seperate messages but CDMA carriers have trouble tagging them as such for whatever reason which would let the phone at the receiving end know to restitch the msg together and display as 1 long msg instead of 3 seperate ones. One trick to get it to work is sending it via MMS which doesn't really have a limit for how long :) In the three years I was on Verizon, I've had zero problems sending 2-3 blocks of text messages (320-480 characters), or zero problems receiving them. Here in the UK most contracts include free SMS but an MMS message can cost between 25-40p each. This isn't sometimes an option if sending a long rubbish joke to a contact list. Before it was say 500 SMS and 20MMS then it changed to say 2,000 SMS/MMS then it's now just unlimited "Messaging" which includes any of the type. To Tsupersonic - not defending any platform but I've always had issues sending to Verizon people which is why I mentioned that. Maybe they've fixed it in the years for some phones or something but this was always a bane in my butt with Verizon users: One of the huge selling points of GSM for me personally has been long SMS support. If you routinely send texts that are over 160 characters, UMTS/GSM generally wins because most carriers implement long SMS support properly. Verizon had had its own message concatenation back in the day, but I've yet to see it really used on a smartphone of theirs. It was one of the first things I tested against a friend of mine who also has a Verizon iPhone 4. Turns out that between Verizon customers, SMS concatenation does work, and long multi-texts are combined into one. That's hugely awesome if you SMS as much as I do.However, concatenation doesn't always work between carriers. That's not a carrier specific thing, but just crappy SMS interchanges between carriers being a problem. http://www.anandtech.com/show/4163/verizon-iphone-4-review/3 (from 2011) It's a GSM implementation that's been applied to CDMA. As mentioned apparently it always worked between VZW customers but when switching to GSM (or other carriers) they had issues. GSM to GSM always worked in my testing.
