Plants vs Zombies 2 confimed for a July 2013 launch
by John Callaham

In May 2009, PopCap Games released Plants vs Zombies for the Windows and Mac platforms. The tower defense game, where players grow plants with special abilities to defend a garden against cartoon-ish zombies, was an instant critical and sales hit and has been released on nearly every console, PC and mobile game platform since 2009.

In 2012, PopCap announced plans to launch a sequel to the game that would be out sometime in spring 2013. Today, PopCap Games revealed that Plants vs Zombies 2 would now be out in July. Unfortunately, the company has yet to release any more details on the sequel, including which platforms will be a part of the launch time period. Instead, PopCap released a new video on YouTube showing a number of people pleading with the company to release Plants vs Zombies 2, including Microsoft's "Major Nelson" Larry Hryb.

The news of Plants Vs Zombies 2 coming in July can't come at a better time for PopCap, which was acquired by Electronic Arts for $750 million in 2011, two years after the release of the original game. In 2012, PopCap laid off 50 of its team members as it made the move to releasing more games on mobile platforms.

Not one frame of ingame footage, completely pointless video.

I hope PopCap aren't going to turn PvZ 2 into one of those stupid "free to play" games where you are constantly nagged to buy things.

Now that EA owns them I'd almost be surprised if they didn't.

Free to play hasn't been quite as successful for EA recently, so now you'll have to purchase the game and also be constantly nagged to buy things.

Has the mandatory 20$ day-one DLC been announced yet?

Just like recent Call of Duty teaser.

Indeed. After the Aliens:Colonial Marines fiasco, these devs and publishers need to be showing accurate ingame footage before people are going to order.

Bit sceptical as to how good this sequel will be, given that the creator of the original isn't working on it.

Which is kind of funny as well. Why fire the creator of a game when you're gonna make a sequel?

If George Fan and Laura Shigihara are not involved in this, the heart and soul of this game are sold to EA.

First one was great. This one? I'll pass. Thanks EA.
