The Evil Overlord
Let me get this straight, you think a Sony shelf stereo is 7000 watts, (I've seen true 1000 watt amplifiers and trust me, they're bigger than that whole unit, speakers 'n' all) and to run 5.1 or 7.1 you want a car amp? Why not simply buy a 5.1 reciever amp in the 40, 60 or 100 watt range, cause I'll tell you this, those 5.1 surround blue ray players that boast thousands of watts are lies,

The Evil Overlord
~snip~ Here's one I've found after a quick search (NOTE the model may no longer be available in your area as I don't know which nation you live in...) http://salestores.com/jvcrxd40.html http://www.audiocircle.com/index.php?topic=58529.0 http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/PUSA/Home/AV-Receivers/Pioneer+Receivers/VSX-815-K With most of these, if you're running sound for your computer, you can simply set the volume, and then adjust from the system tray, there is little to no danger of damaging your speakers at the lower end of the volume scale, though under high volumes you could, most modern amps have a safety cut off, but as I'm not 100% aware of the exact spec of your speakers I make no promises... (I apologise as I should have mentioned this in my first post) the one I use in my bedroom is A Technics SA-EH790, it's old but still kicks out great sound (for my bedroom) and doen't actually need a sub as the main speakers are bassy enough... The Evil Overlord
no that was an example http://www.superfi.co.uk/P-6737-discontinued-technics-sceh790-home-cinema-mini-system.aspx this is my stereo in my bedroom it can handle 6 channel input, with dolby pro logic, I didn't sugges you get that exact one, and I use it as a 2 channel, (the satellites are in storage) as it's main role is an alarm clock (since I got married) but it does compensate for not being true 5.1 when running with the satellites, true 5.1 surround systems can start at ?2000 UK decent ones, a great deal more... which is why mostly if one is limited by a budged one buys a dvd or blue ray player that comes with 5.1 built in, but like I said, the figures of wattage on the box are not TRUE as the weight of an amp that handles that kind of power weigh a ton

The Evil Overlord
either one of those as a full stereo (I wouldn't overthink it by trying to use parts from different units,) would do what you want it to do just fine, may I ask why only sony?

The Evil Overlord
not the ONLY options, but a lot more simpler, (true 5.1 or 7.1 home theatre systems can cost more than most cars here in the UK if you're going into full audiophile like meridian, bowers and wilkins, musical fidelity etc...) My living room 2.0 is Rotel preamp rc03, 2 Rotel power amps rb03 running a Bowers and Wilkins DM604 (s3) speaker system each I just use the 5.1 that came with my blue ray as I (1) couldn't be bothered to get a component system and (2) I couldn't afford the one I wanted.
