Nokia shareholder tells CEO Elop he's going to hell

In what ways does Nokia beats Samsung except in the camera?

If you are going to say Samsung using plastic and therefore its build quality sucks, I don't think it takes a genius to switch from plastic to other form of materials.

In all other aspect Samsung does very good in it.

Even if Windows Phone is successful, Samsung could jump from Android to WP anyway and Nokia will have a rival anyway...

TouchWiz

TouchWiz
I am using a Nexus 4. Stock Google Android. Even if I want Toucwzi, I cannot have it. However for Touchwiz devices, they can have Touchwiz if they like. If they don't they can choose to change to CyanogenMod or MIUI or another launcher if they refuse to root.

Also they have some of the additional features such as Multiview.

Having your stock plunge to 3 dollars a share is not a thing stock holders would enjoy. I am sure if you held stock in Nokia you would not be happy too.

That is the risk you take with shares. My investment in Nokia is actually making me money at the moment.

I still think Nokia should have stuck with Meego. At $3 dollars a share that is just a shame. I have had so many Nokia phones in my life but there is no way I will ever touch a Windows Phone in it's current form. I miss Windows Mobile.... Oh well guess I am just old fashioned

According to their own head developer of Meego, they wouldn't have a stable version of Meego ready to launch untill 2015. with the possibility of a basic stripped version late 2013.

How would this have helped them, how would an even more niche OS have helped them at all.

as for Android. that wouldn't have helped them either, Their loss of market share isn't WP, it's their feature phones, they would have lost them anyway, and likely their android selection would have sold even less, especially since Samsung has bought the phone and especially the android market.

And Bada. And Tizen.

Bada is dead, and Tizen is taking it's niche spot.

Why even post your comment because it is obvious your a fanboy.

And you sound like a hater. Evens out nicely. ;)

Anyway, I like my 620 and WPs marketshare is now climbing constantly. Sure, little by little but I think the worst is behind them and hope they continue in this fashion.

To all saying Nokia should've gone Android, they tried but couldn't come to terms with Google. What many people forget is Nokia isn't some company that just makes hardware. They've an entire ecosystem of services of which the most important is Mapping,Location & Commerce. They're the biggest mapping company in the world and wanted their location assets to be default services on its devices but that wasn't acceptable for Google. The other option would be to fork but then they will lag behind other OHA companies as those will've access to latest code while they won't.

It's interesting to see how the smartphone market isn't really a battle of platforms (iOS vs Android vs Windows Phone), but very much a battle of manufacturers. Because Apple is the soul supplier of iOS devices it will always be the case there, but I didn't expect the same thing to happen with Android and Windows Phone.

I kinda wonder what would happen to Android when Samsung decides to launch their own OS. Aren't they working on that? Of course there's no saying whether Samsung will remain on top within the Android landscape, just look at what happened to HTC.

Are these the same shareholders that back in 2006 allowed Nokia management to drop their futuristic ("five years ahead" of it's time link) smartphone ideas a couple of months before the iPhone was released?

Go with Android? How's that working out for HTC?

Android is not HTCs problem. Its lack of support for devices soon after launch, the number of different models produced, and the design of their phones. LG and Huawei are both doing well with Android and have posted profits.. They would have the same issue if they went WP.

Why even post your comment because it is obvious your a fanboy. The point of this article is the stock of Nokia sucks and they are diversified in one platform only. Having your stock plunge to 3 dollars a share is not a thing stock holders would enjoy. I am sure if you held stock in Nokia you would not be happy too.

So? Apple is one platform only too. Nokia is on the road to recovery, and they couldn't have done it without Windows Phone. I love my Lumia, and I think it's the best hardware I've owned to date. I'll definitely be keeping with Nokia hardware in the future.

EDIT: I just noticed the source is The Register. FFS, there's a minute of my life wasted.

If you look at profitable companies in phone business (Apple, Samsung), they focus. They don't try to be jack of all trades. Sure, Samsung released an ATIV phone, but it never bother to update it or market it. The focus is Android and Galaxy product line.

For HTC, they try to be jack of all trades, there hardware is not as compelling and they don't have focus. The results are there to see.

Nokia chose a competing emerging platform with deep enough pockets to ride out the initial hiccups to root a platoform. Considering how deep rooted consumer alliances lies in the mobile world, and how it has been fashionable for some time to be owner of Iphone or Galaxy, i think Nokia did a fabulous job of atleast getting people to start noticing and talking about Lumia's. The numbers would start showing up as the platform matures. The shareholders want the results early and want it fast, which unfortunately would not happen in today's competitive marketplace. They would need to have patience. I for one am sure Elop is betting on the right things.

It's perfectly logical to focus on one platform after a while. This said i still think that Nokia, like other companies, should have tried both Android and WP platform and decide after which one it should focus on. Putting all your eggs in the same basket from the get go is rarely a good idea. It might works in the long run but i still think it was a bad decision (unless the infamous money hat was involved which would not surprise me at all).

liju made a great point about Nokia's mapping services. In order to go Android they may have to leave them behind for Google Maps.

Windows Phone fans are just spreading so much misinformation in this thread.

- MeeGo wasn't going to take until 2015 to be ready. They actually shipped a phone with it.

- Nokia did not make a profit last quarter. Why do you think the shareholders are so angry?

- Nokia is in far more trouble then Blackberry. They actually reported a profit last quarter, have no debt, their own platform, and a device management service that supports iOS and Android.

Elop has done nothing but hurt Nokia by using that fisher price os and turned them into a patent troll.

Not really, they could have either shipped with both or only with their own services (and no GApps) while still being able to bundle the Google Play store.

I'd like to know who some of these shareholders are, that think they can run a company better than a CEO. They are so damn greedy it's disgusting. If I were Elop I'd just tell them if they like android so much, then go ahead and invest in those other companies and see how they do. It's the same greedy shareholders that are calling for Ballmer's job, even though quarter after quarter Microsoft is turning billions of dollars in profit. Do these shareholders think that is not enough? Ridiculous.

Nokia was losing much more money quarter after quarter before Elop went to Windows Phone.

Do you even know what a patent troll is? Nokia actually has implemented software and devices that use their patents. A patent troll has a patent and no implementation only for the sake of litigation.

I figured that would be a deal-breaker for both companies. I'm glad Nokia went with Windows Phone because the OS is really good. Nokia's HERE apps makes it better. I use HERE Maps/Transit/Drive Beta a lot because of how well it works.

Windows Phone fanboys are just becoming delusional now. There is so much misinformation in this thread from them that they truely seem to believe.

Elop has done nothing but hurt Nokia by using that fisher price boring os and turned them into a patent troll.

No one is being delusional, fanboy or otherwise.

To address your points:

  • Consider this tweet from the "Director of Applications, MeeGo at Nokia":
Javascript is not enabled or refresh the page to view.Click here to view the Tweet
As far as we know, MeeGo is dead until 2015.
  • You're right. They didn't make a profit but according to their Q4 2012 results, they did ($585.7M). And they sold more Lumia devices in Q1 2013 than Q4 2012 (5.6M vs. 4.4M which is a 27% increase). And let's not ignore the $1B+ they got from Microsoft for switching to Windows Phone in the first place.
  • Overall, BlackBerry has been, and may still be, in a worse position than Nokia. It took them a long time to release BB10 and it still hasn't made a large impact on the market. The benefits of moving forward with Windows Phone greatly outweighed the benefits of switching to Android. Not only does Nokia have Microsoft's support, they have an OS that isn't Android. HTC is right behind Samsung and they're not doing well.

What Elop has done, and what you're conveniently ignoring, has helped Nokia. They'd be in a worse position if they switched to Android.

Anyway, are you trying to be a troll? There's nothing "Fisher Price" about Windows Phone.

everyone knows windows phone is beginning to do some damage.breaking the double digit barrier is the hardest thing to do,and once that is done, things will fall into place. And just because nokia didn't make a profit last quarter means absolutely squat. This was mostly caused by the dumbphone collapse that happened, which is irrelevant to the future. they could have laid off a bunch of peope,or sold some more of their assets and reported a profit, but they didn't. they are planting the seeds for the future, and it is working. last quarter they sold 5.6 million lumias. that's with production inssues with some of their phones like the 920. and when production returned to running smoothly, the 920 quickly shot up as the most popular windows phone. in a month after the 520 and 720 were released. the 520 already grabbed a nice chunk of wp marketshare. imagine what happens when all the channels are filled with all these nokia phone models? next quarter apple is expected to sell 27 million iphones. I would take a guess that nokia will sell close to 8 or 9 million, and another 1-2 million from the other oems. WP is really getting close, and the target WP is going after is iphone. if they pass that, the floodgates will open. that's exactly what happened with android. same damn story. started growing slowly, kept gaining share here and there. and once it passed iphone, it just snowballed from there.

actually, no they didn't. They shipped HArmattan, it was also unfinished and buggy.

- Nokia did not make a profit last quarter. Why do you think the shareholders are so angry?

errr. read up on the facts and don't make up your own perhaps.

- Nokia is in far more trouble then Blackberry. They actually reported a profit last quarter, have no debt, their own platform, and a device management service that supports iOS and Android.

So you're saying the copany that's making profits (yes that's Nokia) growing in their smart phone share, still owns all the developing markets with their features phones is doing worse than the company that's losing market share constantly. failed hard on their pad experiment, an their new phones aren't selling at all. and the one market they did have, the business market is leaving them behind.

good logic...

yes, windows phone fans are the ones spreading mis-information in this thread

Elop has done nothing but hurt Nokia by using that fisher price os and turned them into a patent troll.

good thing you're not trolling or anything... btw, do you know what a board is, as in the group of people that hires the CEO and actually runs the company, the people that hired Elop, with the PRE-defined mission to switch the company to Windows Phone.

My response is: are your serious?

Samsung is squeezing other Anndroid OEMs out of the market. Just ask HTC.

Sure, there are some profitable Chinese companies that make Android devices (ie. Huawei and ZTE ), but they are subsidized by the Chinese government.

Nokia didn't go with MeeGo because it doesn't have enough money to go alone. People are not going to come to a platform that doesn't have many popular apps.

Microsoft has been helping developers (often financially) port apps to the Windows Phone platform.
