Sir Alex Ferguson retires!

Wow. End of an era. I've never known a Manchester United without him. Emotional news.

Start the rumor mill to who will replace him.

Hopefully Mourinho will be his replacement. He's the only one that could really come close to filling in the gap Fergie will leave behind.

Shocking news. The way he has been talking for a while is that he will stay on for many years.

It is difficult to pick a replacement if the rumours are true and Mourinho is going back to Chelsea. I bet he'll really want to get out of that deal and go to Man Utd.

I think him or someone like Pep Guardiola would be a good choice. David Moyes is another, he just hasn't had a chance at a big club, so i don't know how he'd handle it.

This has to have been planned for a while now. One thing is for sure, every top manager in the world will want this job. Regardless of what contract they have at their current club.

It's been speculated for years, and now he's finally done it. Credit where credit is due, he has done a fantastic job with United over the past 20 odd years. It leaves the door open for Mourinho or Moyes, as they're the ones who have been labelled in the press in recent years as a sucessor to Ferguson.

Can't blame him, he's long gone past the point where he had anything left to prove. Massive boots to feel, will be interesting to see who is brave enough to try it

Probably a scandal incoming and thought '****, i better get out'

Well he has an upcoming surgery, so it likely has something to do with that.

Quite a sad day and I don't think anybody can fill his shoes. I just hope whoever they bring in is successful and they don't go to a Chelsea-type yearly manager sacking.

According to the BBC, Moyes (Everton manager) is set to be named the new United manager.

That's either going to be a good appointment or Utd are going to end up like every other club and changing manager yearly

Yeah, and the problem with changing managers all the time means that the players won't built trust/respect for the manager because they know they won't be there for long.

I hope they don't and Moyes works out because he is a good manager just the lack of trophies and european experience is worrying

Good.

It will be funny if he is back in the news in a few week's time as the latest addition to Operation Yewtree's hit list. :)

Yep its happening.

Not entirely convinced he is good enough (record against United, Arsenal, Chelsea & Liverpool => not a single away win, plus Europe) but will support him next season. Think he needs a big (midfield) signing in the summer to win over some of the doubters.

Absolutely. A big signing would be huge for him.

I doubt Ronaldo will happen, but maybe Falcao.

Depends on Rooney imo. Ronaldo back would have me excited for next season.

His first game could be Manchester Derby

If he cant get the team fired up for that then there's no hope. Judging by the Scouse derbies though he should cope.

We should still be aiming for trophies, even in his first season.

Yeah there's been lots of rumors about that, and it would be awesome to see him come back since he's a lot more mature, but I'm sure he would demand a pretty extreme paycheck. Unless the stock offering allows them to have a higher payroll. Who knows.
