Should one turn off File History before making a system image?

Question

Is what I'm wondering.

I restored my Windows 8 PC to a system image that I made 2 months ago. Before restoring Windows, I ran File History to make sure I had an up to date backup of the files in the Photos and Documents Libraries. (I also copied some folders over manually for extra assurance).

After restoring to the earlier image, I tried to recover those photos and documents. Unfortunately, File History couldn't find them. The last backup date was listed as March 10, 2013 and not May 9, 2013. The files are on my backup drive, but they can only be restored by browsing through the Explorer directory and sifting through multiple copies of the same file--in addition, the file names have been changed as a part of File History's indexing.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get around this conflict? (Aside from "don't use File History")
