Pentagon scrubs 3D gun plans from Internet

Recommended Posts

The world's first 3D-printed handgun, The Liberator, has had its liberty taken away by the government.

Plans for the working handgun were posted online Monday by Cody Wilson, founder of Defense Distributed, potentially allowing anyone with access to a 3D printer to make a firearm from plastic. The plans, which had been in the works for months, caused alarm among gun control advocates but were seen by some Second Amendment advocates as a breakthrough. More than 100,000 copies of the plans were downloaded before the federal government took the files.

?[Defense Distributed's] files are being removed from public access at the request of the U.S. Department of Defense Trade Controls," read a banner atop the website. "Until further notice, the United States government claims control of the information.?

"They asked that I take it down while they determine if they have the authority to control the info," he said. "It's clearly a direct response to everything we did this week. 3D printing is clearly not the best way to make an effective weapon."

"If this is an attempt to control the info from getting out there, it's clearly a weak one," he said, adding that the CAD design for the weapon has already spread across the Internet at downloading sites like the Pirate Bay.

Nice, the United States just loves to censor whatever they get their hands on. I say if it is in accordance to federal law, let it stay out there, the file is already out on the internet, so what's the point now?

Those plans should have never ended up on the internet in the first place.

There is no need for people to start making their own guns.

Yes there is, government tries to ban them, now people could hypothetically make their own to protect their rights.

How does having a Gun protect your Rights?

What? You mean the government wasn't happy with people giving anyone (including every gun nut, terrorist and psychopath) the ability to fashion as many lethal weapons as they wanted with absolutely no record or control.

Wow! Who would've thought it.

Quite apart from the fact that you probably need permits and licenses up the wazoo to be a weapon manufacturer and distributor which these idiots obviously didn't factor or even consider.

Read about the purpose of the 2nd amendment. I'll give you a hint, it's not for hunting deer.

When was this declaration originally proposed? Times change my friend.

I can't think of any situation that requires I have a gun to protect my rights. I can however think of many situations that require a gun to enforce what I think is right (and herein lays the problem).

It was proposed during a time of tyrannical government. And look at where governments in the world are going today. If you don't agree that they're becoming more tyrannical then you need to wake up. I'm not sure in the situation in AU, but here in the US the government wants to have windows into every facet of our lives.

This does not infringe on your precious 2nd amendment. You can still buy your weapon of choice from a store after a way to short/small back ground check.

And if that's to harsh, go to a gun show and buy whatever you want without a background check!

You people keep baffling me.

I'm sure the Australian Gov't would be just as quick to limit the ability for the average person to print a deadly weapon. Although, I do admit the American Gov't appears to be a little tiny bit evil (a little goes a long way) I don't think there is any malicious intent here. I'm pretty sure they just don't want Joe Schmoe printing out a Gun. Fair enough, I don't either.

Also, it's becoming overly cliche to say "Wake up"; I'm awake.

And if you beleive the second amendment will somehow allow you to forcibly change things a government in the modern world is doing then you, too, need to wake up.

Who cares about the second amendment. This printed gun is a major problem overall, that news articles and people here seem to not understand or even mention.

Problems with a 3D gun that is home made.

1. Will bankrupt gun manufacturers and put 1000's of people on unemployment.

2. No way to trace or track the weapon. Build it, kill someone, melt it... within hours.

3. EVERYONE HAS ACCESS to a gun now. I no longer have to be a US citizen to obtain a gun legally. Any Terrorist, Murderer, Mafioso, etc no longer needs to go through the trouble of obtaining an illegal weapon. Just go home, sit with your family as the printer is printing a "document".

4. Can pass through metal detectors, especially if you use metal that doesn't go off on metal detectors. (I think metal detectors have a minimum limit on metal before they go off.)

5. 3D printed objects are incredibly light, easy to conceal and hide it almost anywhere.

6. If you have technologically competent children in your house, they can make it themselves without searching your house for a gun or finding one "accidentally."

Soo many more problems with this entire process that I cannot write it all down. I can also predict some "genius" figure out how to build a lethal bullet too using a 3D printer.

Einstein should of stated "Geniuses build technology to better the planet, but idiots will always try to weaponize it first."

In the foreseeable future, I can see 3D printers become illegal if 3D Printed weapons become a real problem. Thus, a great technology would forever be lost.

Yeah, I think it's about time you moved out of Syria.

The government will leave the 2nd amendment alone, it's none of their concern in the first place. Your puny gun won't match a drone strike in a hypothetical revolution anyway.

I highly doubt 3D printers will be made illegal. It's just a tool. Much like guns, it's what you end up doing with it that matters.

The only thing I imagine the government could do would be to track downloads of this material, much like the feds do with child porn and such.

Fat lot of good that will do - real guns are far more readily available than printed guns in the US.

They need to scrub the love of guns from the American psyche.

The world has been asking the USA this for a long time!

There are other countries where you pretty much have solid rights to gun ownership as a citizen, like Austria. Austria does have a licensing system, although many US states like New York do, too.
