Xbox One will not block used games

Recommended Posts

Microsoft just released an ambiguous statement about the future of used games sales on the Xbox One. Indirect unofficial Microsoft sources are now saying that while the system will require regular checks for online connectivity, there won't be a fee for used games.

Unidentified sources have told Polygon that while it is true that the system will require online connectivity of some kind, most details are still up in the air. Special circumstances may be enacted for players who do not have Internet access, like active-duty soldiers serving in war zones.

As far as used games go, Polygon said, "The Xbox One will automatically authenticate a game using an encryption code built into a game's disc, when it is installed on the machine. That authentication on the console's hard drive tied to the game is then verified regularly through an internet connection. When a person sells the game or it is installed and played on another system, the game is deauthenticated on the original machine until the disc is brought back and used to re-authenticate the installation."

Dear lord leave it be, you guys get new rumours that **** future xbox buyers then only to later reveal fake, inacurate or to be confirmed. You guys should be movie script writters because you make rumours like every two hours or so.

Just wait about 15 more days and confirm everything before saying bad stuff about the xbox or another console ( which isn't the case as im yet to see those rumours viciously take a stab at ps4, as an example from a forum post ps4 could also have region lock but no one metions it, and it is breaking laws not to implement those remember, at least in some countries).

I'm sensing a lot of anger

As time passes it seems all the initial FUD is going away. The system doesn't sound all doom and gloom like some thought it was. The authentication system sounds flexible enough that even lending games is doable. The only thing now is how long between authentication checks? Is it infact often or only when you do the initial install of the game? Or does it check each time a update gets pushed out or when you connect for some MP? Just a few more details to find out before we can put this to rest.

We need more details than just what a twitter PR person has to offer. Whatever the outcome why has MS handled the whole thing so badly :/

Deals aren't final yet with retailers? Or maybe they're holding off for E3 to surprise us with some new service? What if users can gift games/dlc etc to friends? What if you can digitally sell your own stuff to people through Live? Who knows what they have planned exactly? They registered Xbox Fusion and have yet to even talk about that, which it does indeed seem to be some new service at this point. It could be game related as well. All these questions around games should be answered at E3 when they've said they'll talk about games.

We are not the ones writing this stuff, we are merely sharing info from other sources, in this case, an official Xbox Support twitter account.

Microsoft said they will talk more and reveal more at e3 but it seems a lot of people don't know the meaning wait, they expect Microsoft to just say everything in One shot. I'm betting the company has something new they're either going to talk about or show off and if they should talk about it now where does that leave them?

All these guys "Microsoft isn't talking about it so it must be true"

And "they keep giving none specific and vague answers so it must be true" even though the company said they will talk about it at e3 just not right now.

I bet when Microsoft doesn't give an exact release date they will say things like "the Xbox has been pushed back to 2014!"

It's amusing that the thread debunking the rumors everyone seems to be taking as fact doesn't get any attention around here.

People love to masturbate over controversy

In other website, it says that Xbox one will not charge gamers for used games, they will charge the brick&mortar companies that sells used games. Or you could say, they WILL CHARGE GAMERS (but indirectly).

The problem was never that they would BLOCK used games, rather that they would charge people money for used games. Meaning that if you borrowed a game from your friend, you would have to pay Microsoft money in order to play the game that your friend had bought.

And the twitter quote clearly says that they aren't going to charge for used games. Anything else?

There has been newer info out that says that's not the case, you can lend your games out and in doing so you can't play it while that same copy is authenticated on your friends system. Once you get the disc back and authenticate your copy again then you're good to go. It sounds exactly the same as it's always been, no disc/cart, no play. The fact of the matter is that as time passes and we get closer to E3 these doom and gloom rumors are looking more and more like minor tweaks to the same system we've had since the start.

Ahh good to know a random Xbox support account knows more than major nelson and Phil Harrison who both confirmed the fee. Consider us told.

Seriously though did you even look at the date? This was released just after the conference and just added to the confusion of Microsofts dreadful PR. The fee for lending to a friend was confirmed after this tweet. Funny that people think this dismisses the 'Fud' though.

Major Nelson confirmed there's a fee for lending games? Where exactly? Last thing he said was that all these rumors flying around are inaccurate and incomplete. As for the "fee" Harrison talked about, that sounded to me more like a case of where you get your game back and your friend still wants to play the game that's still installed on their system. The game isn't "lent" anymore since you took the disc back home and probably re authorized it on your own system. So if they want to play it again then the "fee" would be them actually buying it for themselves now. That'd turn it into a digital GoD purchase.

The only fee that has any semi-fact to it is that retailers will get charged something for used games.

There isn't any. No one has confirmed anything, it's just rumors being thrown around.

They aren't rumours. It is what Microsoft themselves told the press  .

Phil Harrison stated: You'll have to pay a fee?and not just some sort of activation fee, but the actual price of that game.

Major Nelson clarified: Should you choose to play your game at your friend?s house, there is no fee to play that game while you are signed in to your profile.

I think its pretty clear that you cant lend a game to a friend as they are linked to your profile, they would have to pay to buy the game as Phil stated.

You do realise that the fee is if you want to install the game and play it without the game disc right? So essentially owning the game on 2 machines.

People are so ****ing stupid. This has been blown so much out of hand, I really feel for MS.

Also, do people realise that when you've played a game on your account and play on someone elses xbox, you can install and download any game you've played and own.
