Windows 8 / 10: Shutdown Hibernation hybrid : Consumers confused.

Recommended Posts

Windows 8's new "Shutdown" is more of a hibernation hybrid, where to achieve faster boot times never truly shutsdown / restarts. The issue I see with this is people who use the shut down option because they think they are shutting their computer off and that it's acting like a restart like it has in every previous version of windows, when in fact it never really gets a true reboot. So over time issues start to arrise

So i'm not a fan of the new shutdown as I think people think they are always starting their computers up fresh. When in fact they are not.

Today I got a call from a customer who was having problems opening her ?Windows Live Mail?. It would just sit there for a while then bomb out. I asked her ?When was the last time you restarted the computer? .. she said ?I turned it off last night?. I told her ?a shut down really isn?t a shut down, to restart / refresh you have to do a ?restart? not a shut down.

I think she has been ?Shutting the computer down? instead of doing a reboot, then it?s hadn?t been restarted in a while.

So I told her that was my thought about what was happening and that lets do a restart right now.

So we told the computer to restart. Low and behold her email started working again.

God I hate this shutdown hibernation hybrid ****.

The need for a 'fresh' restart really should be rare enough to fit within the normal update cycle. OTOH, I have noticed that Win8 seems to have more 'post-resume' HDD activity than Win7 so using this model does seem to have a trade-off.

the only problems i have seen with it is very rarely the hibernation files will corrupt somehow preventing the computer from coming on properly (i have never had this happen with my own machines) doing a full actual restart always resolves the issues. Also when doing a full restart, it is MUCH longer than the same machine with windows 7.

From a personal perspective I like the hibernation hybrid, nice fast boot sequence and little difference with the shutdown speed. Only time I do a reboot is after a driver installation or patch update, so far I've had no problems. But then I don't work in a computer shop and have no intention of deploying Win8 within my network so my exposure to any issues that might cause is limited.

If the hibernation file is corrupting, then you've got hardware issues.

  • 3 months later...

I only restart my computer for Windows Updates and I haven't had any problems ever. I usually put it to sleep at night by closing the lid and sometimes I boot into my older Windows partition where I have my old games and such (which would be through the hybrid shutdown). The hybrid shutdown is fine because it still restarts drivers and userspace. The kernelspace is much more stable than userspace and shouldn't need to reboot.

  • 2 weeks later...

Today I got a call from a customer who just got a computer with windows 8 a few weeks ago. He said he has verizon internet  and is using the "AOL software" when ever he would go into his messages it would just say "Loading" ... but would never load. This had been going on for the past few days.

I asked him when the last time he restarted was. He says "I restart the computer every day".

I asked him "Do you restart or do you shut down""

He said "I shut down".

I then explained to him why that's not the same as a restart and told him "Right now do an actual restart" ..

He did, then went back into his email and all of his messages loaded first try.

I'm telling you this new "hibernation / shutdown" is a big issue for consumers because they don't know shutdown isn't functioning like it did with every previous version of windows

I agree its not a good feature at all and prevents access to the BIOS unless you do a restart or an unexpected shutdown (proper shut down). I have it disabled because It causes my laptop to screw up completely.

Yep... In my case I had a problem with creative software, at first I didn't knew why... until I found out that I wasn't restarting at all. Removed that terrible option, not a single problem thereafter.

For those who want the old shutdown there is a Power app that wen instaledl gives the user a right click context menu that allow them to do a full shut down.  This can be found over on eight fourm in the tutorial section. . .good luck

Well that's his first problem... :p

On topic, I love the fast boot and haven't had a problem with it.  But then again, I rarely shutdown my laptop...mostly it just sleeps.  Haven't had any issues.

It's also not accurate to just lump everyone together and say consumers are confused.  A couple people are confused and you got their calls, but that's your job (I imagine).  You don't hear about all the people whom it's working just fine for.

I disabled fast startup/hybrid hibernation on Windows 8 because I didn't feel it was healthy for my pc. It is almost the same as a human staying awake endlessly and getting no sleep.

Huh? Based on what reasoning?

Because doing a fresh startup, you are freshly loading the drivers and everything rather than starting your PC back to a previous state.

Based on this entire thread

Im not seeing where using Hibernation is unhealthy for a PC. Mine only get started once a month when updates requirement. Its been like that for years and Ive never had "health" issues relating to is.

I have SSD drive and don't notice the difference between hybrid shutdown or just shutdown. It might be there but I don't notice it. If I didn't have to install so much stuff for gaming and other usages then it probably would boot in 2 seconds but neither method for me boots that fast. Creative drivers alone adds all kinds of services and crap let alone the codecs and all the other crap I need.
