HTC One with stock Android launching June 26th for $599

It was rumored, and now it's here: on stage at D, Sundar Pichai just revealed a new version of the HTC One that runs an untouched, stock version of the Android operating system. It wil be available from the Google Play store starting June 26th for $599. The unlocked device will run on both AT&T and T-Mobile in the United States with support for high-speed LTE data on both networks. This "Nexus user experience" version will contain 32GB of built-in storage. Much like the special edition Samsung Galaxy S4 unveiled during I/O, Google will be directly handling future software updates.

With the announcement, customers can now purchase the two leading Android handsets available today stripped entirely of the custom ? and often criticized ? manufacturer "skins" they originally shipped with. Suffice it to say, with both devices running identical software, it will be interesting to see which Google Edition smartphone proves more popular in the weeks and months to come.

Awesome - I hope this is an RUU that I can just flash to my HTC One. While I don't mind Sense, I do miss the stock Android experience and 'timely' updates that my Galaxy Nexus provided (timely in quotes because Verizon messed that up).

It's not totally 'Stock Android' as Beats Audio is proprietary and does not qualify itself to be part of AOSP. It's more like some kind a vanilla version of Android compiled using HTC's proprietary blobs along with their own kernel.

they clarified that Beats is a hardware thing that will be there (always enabled) and that there wont be any notification icon.

I'm not sure about the camera though. The sensor is supposed to be 4 MPixels and that's it right? the ultrapixels thing is because the sensor is physically bigger for each pixel , but it's still 4 MP I understand? SO it should only take 4 Megapixel pics.

Personally I never cared for all the custom stuff they put in CM, like the theme chooser, Terminal, etc. I would prefer an official stock ROM.

will that HTC one version ship with any difference in hardware? If not, could I simply get a today HTC One and later on flash the google stock version on it? Somehow this sounds too nice to be true. There are surely some complication I am not aware of?
