I am shaking my head at this story! :(

A 5 year old boy from Maryland brought a fake cap gun on a bus to show his friends at school. Then, he was pulled into the prinicipals office after and interrogated for 2 hours, "uncharacteristically" wetting his pants in the process. His mother wasn't called in until after the "interorgation". The boy received a 10 day suspension and the family's attorney is trying to get it reversed.

Well I don't see anything wrong with this. The only thing I want to know is how the "interrogation" was conducted, and what questions were asked.

You don't see anything wrong with a 5 year old kid being punished simply because he had a toy gun?

The problem I see here is that the story is extremely one sided. only showing the parents side, who obviously want to pain the school in as bad a light as possible so they have a strong case when they inevitably sue for money.

I find it very likely he was reprimanded and held out of class for 2 hours. that he was "interrogated" for 2 hours however... yeah, not so sure. Most likely the principal and maybe a nurse or the school psych or whatever they have(most school have some kind of mental health counselor today), simply gave him a short reprimand and then simply talked to him about guns and what he did and why he did, why he shouldn't have done it, what consequences such actions could lead to if something had happened and cops saw it and mistook it for a real gun.

that wouldn't be an interrogation, it would be normal follow up that the school is expected to do to calm the student and teach them about consequences and dangers.

it's an item he was not allowed to bring to school. toy guns have also led to fatal incidents where cops or others can't tell it's a toy gun at a distance. generally at 5 years old they're not likely to shoot at the first sign of a gun. but the kid still needs to be taght the dangers, he's not going to stay 5 years forever. you learn by being taught, and being told what not to do. There is of course the hard method to learn, but you rarely learn much from being a dumb teenager with a realistic BB gun with a cops 9mm in your chest because you where playing around with it in public. getting a little lesson now at 5, may prevent something like this in the future.

how do parents contain their anger? my dad would go crazy if anyone even raised their voice to me *unless my mother* ... the father of this boy should have punched the principle firmly between the eyes.

Please. The toy gun paranoia is a pretty new thing and it's stupid. Kids have been taking their toy guns to school for 100+ years and it's only now becoming a problem?

In some states it's not uncommon to see guns in the windows of teenagers cars in school parking lots, as well. But yeah...gotta watch out for those 5 year olds. Future terrorists of the world.

It's so pathetic that we're treating people like world class criminals before they've even committed a crime. And 5 year olds at that.

Pop tarts? Lego guns? Plastic revolvers with an orange tip on them? Dangerous times we live in.

Hitting a teacher is a federal offense. You can get life imprisonment for that.

it's not that new, there was some old cop's rerun form like the 80's where they stopped a car with idiot teenagers and found a realistic looking bb gun. You haven't been allowed to bring toy guns to school for a very long time.

and as I said, we only know half the story here, and that's the family side, the ones that are probably hyping it up to sue for the most amount of ridiculous money.

I know these are isolated instances, but this really just reinforces my disgust for the US "education" system. This kid should have been told not to bring that in again (it's a ****ing cap gun, I played with those when I was a kid...) and his parents should have been notified to ensure it doesn't happen again. Bam, situation resolved, the kid can go to class.

Source? I've never heard of such a thing, and after a couple of Google searches the only thing close is an answer here. He states

"Almost any state crime (which assaulting a teacher would be) can also become a federal offense. The federal prosecutor would have to show some connection with the school or the teacher and federal law, economy, or other connection. Sometimes something as simple as the school receiving federal funds could qualify and allow federal prosecution. The best thing would be don't hit your teacher. If there's a problem, talk to the principal or other official."

So it sounds like any state employed person recieving federal money COULD be elevated to a Federal Offence, NOT that it's always going to be.

Back on topic, my little girl starts school next year and I will have a hard time restraining myself if something like this happened to her, lucky or unlucky for me I would probably be spending most of the time holding my wife down so she couldn't get to them. ;)

Sorry feel like I didn't read the article properly. I disagree with the 10 day school suspension, but besides that, everything else seems okay. Why would a parent let their kid leave the house with a toy gun :/
